Learning about remembrance

My boys are growing up and learning about the world they live in all the time.  Today was the first time Maxi has took part in the remembrance parade in the village adn also the first time that Mini has sat in the congregation.

Learning that we honor those who have lost their lives.  My boys made their father very proud of them today.  Both behaved impeccably, both asked all sorts of questions and more than that they listened whilst he told them of their great, great Uncle John who died in the last days of world war 2.

Both the boys have been learning about remembrance at school and came home and told us about the following poems

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses,row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Lt Colonel John McCrae (1872–1918)

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and inthe morning

we will remember them.

Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

Mini was transfixed during the service and also sat through the whole of songs of praise this evening too.  For me it is important that my children understand that we are still losing people in war zones today and that this is not about ancient history, but about something that touches everyone.  I want the boys to learn respect.
