Both of my boys love mathematics. They enjoy the challenge that they get from doing maths questions and learning their times tables. They both have since starting school and fort Maxi even before he started school. When we were offered a free trial of The Maths Factor, a site set up by Carol Vordeman I jumped at it especially since the new curriculum means that maths has just got harder!
The Maths factor is a modern-day version of Carol’s best-selling maths education books. The Maths Factor is essentially like having Maths guru Carol Vorderman on hand to help parents and children through the changes with newly re-launched online maths school in your own house.
I have to say that we are loving it and it is a fantastic site for both the boys and me. The brilliance of the site is the video’s from Carol teaching the children and walking them through each of the stages. It is a great way to both reinforce previous learning and also introduce new skills to your child at their pace.
The maths Factor is aimed at primary aged children, so key stage one and two. You can start your children by using their age, but if they are steaming through the questions (which my boys did) you can easily move them up or down a stage.
What we loved:
- As a parent I loved that I got an email telling me when the boys had completed a stage and their results for that stage.
- Both the boys found the site simple to navigate and loved the video explanations, which are great for visual learners.
- The terminology is really family to children as it is the same used in school.
- It makes learning fun and reinforces previous learning as well as introducing new learning.
- There is also a games section, which can be used independently of the learning.
- It is great for gifted children as well as children that might be struggling with maths.
Both my boys are talented when it comes to maths, but we also tried it out with a friend’s children and they loved it too.
Each session lasts about 15 minutes including that fab video, an animated game for a warm-up and then a ‘test’. The children are then given their marks and they can print a certificate. It automatically updates the system and the children climb a ladder to the next session.
