DIY Recycled Plastic Bottle Poppy Craft

These poppies are made from plastic bottles – Yes right. A fab way of using plastic bottles. We love making flowers here in The Mad House and at this time of the year, our minds turn to the poppy and remembrance.  I love to use the time that we craft as a family to talk about things and making a poppy craft with the boys always gives me the opportunity to discuss the need for remembrance day and this year Maxi has been studying world war one, so was really interested.  We really enjoyed making these DIY recycled plastic bottle poppy flowers.

I have been trying to find crafts, art and activities that the boys want to get involved in and as soon as they realised that making these DIY recycled plastic bottle poppy flowers involved melting the Plastic bottles over a tea light they were hooked!

Instructions

I started collecting bottle bottoms for this craft a while ago and the thinner the plastic the easier if warps and melts.

Chop the bottom of your bottle off.  Once I started this the boys could continue to cut round.  I believe in using good quality materials with the boys, so they used my sharp scissors.  I feel that it is important to teach children early on that things such as scissors, glue guns and candles are dangerous, but to allow them to use them under supervision.

Once you have cut the bottom of the bottle, you then need to shape it to look like a flower.  Again using good quality small scissors makes this much easier for children to do themselves.

Then comes the time to colour your flowers.  As we are making poppies we chose red for the main part of the flower and black for the center.  Sharpies or permanent markers are necessary for this.

Now for the fun part!  Using a tea light you can shape and melt the flowers.  Make sure you have a window open.  We also found that we could shape the petals with a pair of scissors as we melted the bottles.

We had lots of fun making these.  The boys loved making these poppy flowers, especially Maxi. Maybe because they love playing with fire!
