In 2018 we visited the poppy installation at the Tower of London, which really got the boys interested in Poppies and their significance. Also Maxi has been studying the First World War as his history lessons this term, so poppy crafts for remembrance have been at the forefront of our minds. Poppies make great remembrance day crafts.

We have been busy crafting with poppies ourselves and I thought I would share 11 Easy Poppy crafts for Remembrance Day (Veterans Day) which falls on November 11th each year, and also for Anzac Day (Australia) which falls annually on April 25th. A poppy craft is a great craft for kids to make in the first couple of weeks of November, as we prepare to observe Veterans Day in the US and Remembrance Day in the UK and Canada. These would also work for Memorial Day in the USA which is the last Monday in May.

These poppy crafts can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. These poppies are pretty and creative enough for older kids to enjoy, but most are simple enough for toddlers and preschoolers to make with little assistance. They are great to add to lesson plans and create a perfect meaningful lesson.

What is the significance of Poppies for Remembrance Day crafts?
During WW1, much of the fighting took place in Western Europe. The countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over repeatedly leaving the ground muddy and barren where little or nothing could grow apart from bright red Flanders poppies. These poppies inspired Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write the now-famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.
That poem then inspired an American academic named Moina Michael to adopt the poppy in memory of those who had fallen in the war and it became an official symbol of Remembrance across the United States.
A French lady, Anna Guérin met the Royal British Legon founder Earl Haigand and persuaded him to adopt the poppy as our emblem in the UK.
The red poppy is now a symbol of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. We wear it to honour the bravery of our armed forces.
