Winter Snowflake Jar Luminary | Mum In The Madhouse

Winter Snowflake Jar Luminary

If you have been following our blog for any length of time then you will know that we LOVE recycling glass jars and turning them into tealight holders.  I love being able to bring them out each season and use them to decorate our home and the boys love giving them as gifts.  Now that Halloween is over and we haven’t yet decorated for Christmas we had a need for something to fill the gap and we came up with a winter snowflake jar luminary.

The beauty of this is we can bring it out after we have taken down the Christmas decorations and are feeling like the house needs some sparkle again and we can use it to celebrate the Winter Solstice too.

Start off by removing any labels from your jars.  Lemon or any other citrus essential oil is great for removing sticky residue.  Then coat the outside of the jars with PVA glue, we love Blu Tack white glue, it has a thick consistency ensuring the sequins do not slip off, but it also dries totally clear with a brilliant shine.

Add the sequins.  You can use any but Maxi chose a selection of white and silver snowflakes and he places them pretty randomly around the jar.  Allow the glue to dry.

To cover the rim at the top of your jar you can add ribbon, tape or even ric rac which is what Maxi chose.  Glue it on with your PVA glue and allow to dry and then pop in a battery operated tealight and enjoy.

The brilliance of these are they only cost pennies to make.  Our sequins were bought from the pound shop and we had the glue and ribbon in our stash.

They look lovely during in they come into their own at night when the tealight is lit up and reflects against the sequins.

So make sure you keep hold of any glass jars.
