The BFG’s Frobscottle Recipe

We are huge Roald Dahl fans here in The Mad House, especially Mini and to celebrate the home release of The BFG on DVD and Bluray we have been asked to produce The BFG’s Frobscottle recipe.  This is a post paid for in collaboration with The BFG.

Get whizpopping with the BFG's Frobscottle recipe. You only need a swiggle of this delicious frobscottle and you will see the happy result.

I am not going to give you any spoilers about the movie other than to tell you that Mini found it magical and it is set to become a firm family favorite.

So what do we know about frobscottle? I set Mini on the task of researching it and this is what he came back to me with:

“‘We is now having a swiggle of this delicious frobscottle and you will see the happy result.’ The BFG shook the bottle vigorously. The pale green stuff fizzed and bubbled.”

“And oh gosh, how delicious it was! It was sweet and refreshing. It tasted of vanilla and cream, with just the faintest trace of raspberries on the edge of the flavour. And the bubbles with wonderful. Sophie could actually feel them bouncing and bursting all around her tummy.”

-The BFG, Roald Dahl

What else do we know about frobscottle?  Well, the bubbles in frobscottle instead of travelling upwards and bursting on the surface travel downwards and burst on the bottle.  This causes whizzpoppers.  It’s a burp that comes out the other end (a trump), with an enormous green explosion!

I wanted our Frobscottle recipe to be easy to replicate and delicious, so decided to use things that you can pick up from the supermarket.  This is very different from the Frobscottle recipe  in Roald Dahl’s revolting recipes!  We worked hard on our gobblefunck and gloriumptious idea and squibbled it down here to inspire you to join our topsy turvy reality!

How to make Frobscottle

I am not going to give you exact measurements, as it depends on the strength of your raspberry syrup and also if it is red or clear.  If it is red you will need to add some extra green food colouring.

The secret to getting your bubbles to fizz downwards is the popping candy.  We purchased ours in the home baking aisle where it is much cheaper.  Add a spoonful of popping candy to the bottom of each bottle and they sort of send the bubbles back down.
