How to not gain weight on vacation

It may seem impossible to avoid gaining weight on vacation, much less, to maintain or even lose weight when visiting an exotic locale, but with enough will and advance planning, you can reach your dieting goals even if you’re away from home. It is often easier to adhere to a healthy eating and exercise regimen when you have your own fridge stocked with vegetables and healthy foods and if you are close to your gym. However, you can find healthy foods and opportunities to exercise wherever you go, if you are prepared to think outside the box and do some investigation.

Before You Take Off
while you are deciding which outfits to bring on your trip, consider items that will make keeping fit and eating healthy easier on the go. Remember to take athletic shoes and plenty of exercise outfits so you can go for a jog or hit the gym close to your hotel. Think about some compact exercise equipment that fits well in a suitcase, such as a jump rope or thigh master. If you are going to be close to a swimming pool, remember to pack goggles, a swim cap and other supplies.
In addition to exercise clothing and small equipment, pack some healthy food items. If you are staying in a temporary rental with a kitchen, be sure to bring things that can help you cook low-fat, plant-based meals. Indulge in chocolate chip cookies or brownies with Hampton Creek Just Cookies or Just Brownies mixes and doughs. Put a few jars of Just Mayo in your suitcase so you can enjoy the taste of real mayonnaise but without the eggs, saturated fat and cholesterol. Also, consider bringing along low-fat and plant-based salad dressings so you can order a plain salad in a restaurant without feeling deprived.

When You Arrive
When you arrive at your hotel, ask the staff about fitness clubs located close by if there is not a gym in the hotel. Many fitness clubs allow only members, but some have temporary passes that are ideal for visitors and tourists. If you are a jogger, figure out the best running course that is free from traffic and will give you an optimum workout. Do a Google search on natural and organic supermarkets and healthy restaurants in the area.  Plan your meals ahead so you are less vulnerable to temptations that can arise from uncertainty about what to eat. Create a schedule of exercise and a meal plan around your travel activities for the week. Organizing your time is an important part of sticking to a diet and fitness program, whether you are at home or away.
The Buddy System
It is easier to stick to your diet if you are traveling with someone who is also committed to eating healthy. If you are the only person in your family on a diet, at least make your travel companions aware of your goals and enlist support for sticking with it. Having a sense of accountability will make it less likely that you will cheat on your diet or give it up entirely during the vacation. Try exercising with your travel companion or family members or offer to share a healthy meal together in a restaurant.
Plan a Healthy Vacation
One of the best ways of avoiding temptation is to keep your health regimen in mind when deciding where to go. Choose a vacation spot that has plenty of activities that can give you a good cardiovascular workout. It is relatively easy to keep in shape on a beach where you can swim, surf, snorkel or jog by the sand. Try getaways that involve rigorous activities such as rock climbing and hiking over challenging terrain. Of course, it is easier to lose weight if you take an actual spa vacation, but these tend to carry a heavy price tag. You can create your own spa-style vacation by choosing an area that has all the resources you need for healthy living.
Vacations are often associated with self-indulgence and bending the rules. However, if you don’t want your vacation to interfere with your weight loss goals and your healthy lifestyle, there are many things you can do to combine staying fit with sightseeing. Bring healthy foods with you and small exercise equipment, locate gyms, healthy restaurants and natural supermarkets when you arrive, and select a vacation that is filled with rigorous activities that can give you a good workout. With planning and support of travel companions, you can lose weight while you are on vacation.
