Fab things to do with Kids in Devon

When planning a family holiday with young children (or bigger kids for that matter), it pays to have a good idea of some exciting activities and potential places to visit before arriving at your intended holiday destination. Indeed, it is a truth universally known across the UK that rain is seldom dampened in its enthusiasm by holidays, but that holidays can easily be dampened by the rain. Fortunately, while Devon and the English Riviera are famed for their beauty during the sunny summer months, the entire region has plenty to offer regardless of what tricks the weather is up to.

Enjoying the Local Environment

Let’s be honest with one another, no matter how stunning the local scenery or how good the weather, it’s a safe bet to assume that young children will be less impressed by sweeping landscapes and towering cliffs and more engaged by more interactive things to do.

Luckily, Devon’s impressive landscapes include two fantastic coastlines – complete with stunning golden beaches. There are literally hundreds of idyllic spots from which to enjoy the traditional seaside pastimes of swimming, sandcastle building and wolfing down delicious local ice cream and fish’n chips! The Devon coastline is also home to a splendid array of seaside towns, shops and places to eat, with the English Riviera between Paignton, Brixham and Torquay offering a practically eclectic selection, while to the North Devon coast between Lynton and Lynmouth offers excellent surfing conditions.

Once you’ve enjoyed your fill of the beach, it’s time to head inland and enjoy some of the other attractions that Devon has to offer. The Devonshire countryside is home to a dazzling array of venues to suit visitors of all ages, the BIG Sheep for example, offers several attractions that will delight the entire family and is home to a menagerie of charming farmyard animals. This award-winning family attraction offers a huge variety of activities, with hilarious shows; world-famous Sheep Racing; great rides, including the South-West’s largest family roller coaster; one of the country’s top farm attractions; and a brilliant selection of indoor and out-door play areas.

If all of that activity is beginning to sound a little manic, you’ll be pleased to know that the BIG Sheep features a splendid restaurant and café, which serves up menus of delicious homemade food, cakes and legendary Devonshire Cream Teas. A variety of fast food is also available for those on the move, while the park also houses a well -maintained picnic area.

When it Rains, No Need to Pause

The BIG Sheep is a wonderful park with attractions that are suitable for and accessible during all types of weather and is fortunately not alone in offering first-class entertainment throughout the year. The Milky Way Adventure Park is another site that offers a dizzying array of rides and activities that can be enjoyed whatever the weather. Visitors can take a ride on the Cosmic Typhoon roller coaster or marvel at the park’s recently installed display of amazing Sci-Fi memorabilia, which is comprised of a vast private collection of characters, collectibles and fan art from film and TV with everything from Daleks to Darth Vader!

All of the park’s rides, shows and play areas are included in the entrance fee at The Milky Way Adventure Park, with no hidden extras. With over 110,000 sq. feet of indoor fun and acres of outdoor activities, this is a truly out-of-this-world experience!

In addition to several wild and out-of-this-world parks and attractions, Devon is also home to number of more relaxing excursions that are equally able to delight visitors of all ages. House of Marbles for example, is a charming and unique attraction, situated in the town of Bovey Tracey and offering everything from fascinating glass-making demonstrations and marble runs; amazing museums specialising in glass, games and pottery; and shopping at both House of Marbles itself and Teign Valley Glass.

All of this is available throughout the year with no entrance fee and ample free parking, making it a wonderfully nostalgic day out for the whole family.

Finding a Home Away From Home

After each day exploring the many and varied sights that Devon and the surrounding areas have to offer, a cosy and comfortable place to rest and reminisce is an absolute must. Fortunately, the region is home to a fantastic selection of holiday properties that range from refurbished traditional cottages to stylish modern apartments of all sizes.
