The holiday season is a perfect time to get crafty with the family, and what better way to celebrate than by creating your own Christmas articulated puppets? These adorable puppets, featuring beloved holiday characters like Santa Claus, reindeer, snowmen, and elves, are not only fun to color but also offer a hands-on activity for kids and adults alike. Let’s explore how you can color, assemble, and bring these Christmas characters to life!

What Are Articulated Puppets?
Articulated puppets are movable figures that you can control by manipulating their joints. These puppets are typically made with split pins (also known as brads), which allow the limbs and other parts to move. By coloring and assembling these puppets, kids can engage in imaginative play, creating their own holiday stories and performances.

Step 1: Print Your Puppets
Start by printing out the Christmas paper puppet templates. Each sheet features a different holiday character, including Santa Claus, elves, a reindeer, a snowman, an angel, a gingerbread man, and a nutcracker. You can print these on regular paper, but for a more durable puppet, consider using cardstock.

Step 2: Color Your Characters
Once printed, it’s time to get creative with colors! Use crayons, markers, colored pencils, or even watercolors to bring each character to life. Encourage kids to use traditional holiday colors like red, green, gold, and silver, or let them experiment with their own color schemes. The simple, clear lines of the designs make them perfect for all ages to enjoy.

Step 3: Cut Out the Pieces
After coloring, carefully cut out each part of the puppet. This step might require some adult assistance, especially for younger children, as it involves cutting along detailed lines, but it is great for developing scissor skills. Make sure to cut out all the parts, including the body, arms, legs, and any accessories.
Step 4: Assemble the Puppets
Now, it’s time to assemble your puppets! Use split pins to attach the arms, legs, and other movable parts to the body. The split pins allow the parts to move, giving your puppet life-like articulation. This is a brilliant activity to improve fine motor skills. You also need to attach the thread so you can move your puppets easily. A plastic needle helps with this.

Step 5: Play and Display
Once assembled, your Christmas articulated puppets are ready to play with! Kids can use them for imaginative play, creating their own holiday stories, or even putting their own Christmas puppet show for the family. These puppets also make wonderful holiday decorations; you can hang them on the Christmas tree, place them on the mantel, or use them as part of a festive table setting.

Tips for Success
- Laminate the Puppets: For a more durable puppet that will last through many holiday seasons, consider laminating the parts before cutting them out. This will make the puppets sturdier and more resistant to wear and tear.
- Add Sparkle: To make your puppets extra festive, add some sparkle with glitter glue, sequins, or metallic markers. This will give your characters a magical holiday glow.
- Create a Puppet Theater: If you want to take the fun even further, create a simple puppet theater using a cardboard box. Cut out a window in the front and decorate the box with wrapping paper, ribbon, and other holiday embellishments. Your puppets will be the stars of their very own Christmas show!

These puppets are simple to make, fun to play with, and can be cherished as part of your holiday traditions for years to come. I always print my printables directly onto 160 gsm cardstock using my Epson Ecotank Printer rather than regular paper, this way they are a little more durable and the pens do not bleed through to the other side. However, if you do not have a home printer then just pop to a library and use theirs. To extend the life and suitability of paper puppets I like to laminate them, but if you don’t need a laminator self adhesive laminating sheets are amazing.
