DIY Painted Flower Pots – A Kid-Friendly Craft Perfect for Mother’s Day!

Looking for a heartfelt, handmade gift for Mother’s Day? These painted flower pots are a fun and easy craft for kids that result in a beautiful, personalised present. With just a few simple materials, little hands can create something special that any mum, grandma, or loved one will cherish! 🌸🎨

What You’ll Need:

  • Terracotta clay plant pots (budget-friendly & easy to paint)
  • Terracotta Saucers – I wouldn’t choose to paint these.
  • Emulsion paint (tester pots work great!) You can also use acrylic craft paints.
  • White acrylic paint (for cute polka dots)
  • Pencil with an eraser (perfect for stamping dots)
  • Varnish (to seal and protect)
  • Small plants or flowers (we used primulas!)

How to Make Your DIY Mother’s Day Flower Pots:

1️⃣ Paint the Pots: Let the kids choose their favourite colours and paint the terracotta clay pots using a paint brush. Allow them to dry completely. A second coat may be needed for full coverage. You can paint a small way down the inside if you choose.

2️⃣ Add Polka Dots: Dip the eraser end of a pencil into white acrylic paint and gently press onto the painted pot to create easy and uniform polka dots. This simple method is great for kids of all ages!

3️⃣ Seal with Varnish: Once the paint is dry, apply a thin layer of varnish to protect the design and make it last longer. You can use clay pot sealer if you want a professional finish, we have used a spray varnish and outdoor brush on sealant too.

4️⃣ Plant a Flower: Fill each pot with a beautiful primula, or any small plant of your choice. You could even add herbs.

5️⃣ Gift with Love: Wrap them with a homemade card or ribbon for a heartfelt Mother’s Day gift! 💖

Budget-Friendly & Thoughtful!

This whole project cost less than £4 per pot, making it an affordable yet meaningful homemade gift. It’s also a fantastic activity for little ones to enjoy, teaching them about creativity, gardening, and giving.

💡 TIP: If painting isn’t your thing, try upcycling bowls, teacups, or charity shop finds as cute plant holders!
