Why Learn About Pumpkins?

Pumpkins are more than just Halloween decorations or pie filling – they’re a fantastic hands‑on way to teach children about plant growth, seasons, and food cycles. With their big seeds, fast sprouts, curling vines, and bright fruit, pumpkins are fascinating to observe at every stage.

The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin

Here are the main stages of a pumpkin’s journey:

1. **Seed Stage** – It all begins with a flat, white pumpkin seed planted in warm soil in late spring.

2. **Sprout** – Within about 1–2 weeks, the seedling germinates, sending up green shoots and small leaves.

3. **Vine and Leaves** – The plant stretches out, with vines that can grow many feet long and large leaves that soak up sunlight.

4. **Flower** – Bright yellow flowers bloom. Male blossoms appear first, then female flowers which need pollination (by Bees)to form pumpkins.

5. **Green Pumpkin Stage** – The fertilised flower grows into a small, round green pumpkin that continues to swell and ripen.

6. **Mature Pumpkin** – After 90–120 days, the pumpkin turns orange (or another variety’s color) and is ready for harvest.

What’s Inside a Pumpkin?

Cutting open a pumpkin reveals even more to explore – the skin, pulp, stringy strands, and seeds. Kids love discovering that one pumpkin can hold hundreds of seeds, ready to start the cycle again!
