Hands-On Fun with Tinkerer Box: Our Repeating Crossbow Build Review

We’re always on the lookout for creative, hands-on activities that keep the kids engaged, curious, and learning — and our latest find, Tinkerer Box, ticked every single box!

We recently made the Repeating Crossbow, and it was such a fun and engaging build from start to finish. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, and it struck that perfect balance between being challenging enough to hold Maxi and Mini’s attention, but still achievable without frustration.

Watching the pieces come together step by step was genuinely satisfying — and there’s nothing quite like that moment when you pull the trigger and see your hard work in action! The finished crossbow worked brilliantly, and you could tell how much thought and design had gone into making it sturdy, safe, and educational and with spare parts too.

Discover Tinkerer Box – the creative STEM subscription box that makes learning fun! Our family built the Repeating Crossbow, and it’s one of our favourite engineering projects yet.

What Is Tinkerer Box?

For those who haven’t come across it yet, Tinkerer Box is a subscription-based STEM and creativity box designed to inspire children through building, experimenting, and hands-on discovery.

Each box contains a beautifully packaged project kit complete with all the materials, tools, and easy-to-follow illustrated instructions you need. What I love most is that the boxes are screen-free and encourage problem-solving, engineering thinking, and creativity — all while being loads of fun!

How the Subscription Works

You can choose to subscribe monthly or buy single boxes if you want to try it out first. Each month, subscribers receive a new kit that builds on practical skills and introduces new scientific or engineering concepts.

Tinkerer Box offers different lines tailored to age ranges, so you can pick the perfect level for your child:

  • 🧩 Wonder Box (Ages 3–5) – Perfect for preschoolers, focusing on sensory play, creativity, and simple problem-solving through hands-on fun.
  • 🔧 Odyssey Box (Ages 6–8) – For curious minds who love to explore, these kits introduce basic engineering and science principles in exciting, accessible ways.
  • ⚙️ Tinkerer Box (Ages 9–12) – This is where the more advanced builds come in — like our Repeating Crossbow — encouraging independent making, design thinking, and STEM discovery.

Each kit is designed to build confidence and curiosity while giving kids that wonderful sense of achievement when they finish their project.

Why We Loved It

  • Everything you need is included in the box — no last-minute hunts for tools or parts.
  • The builds are educational but fun, blending STEM learning with hands-on creativity.
  • The finished models are beautifully designed and functional, which really adds to the excitement.
  • It’s a brilliant way to spend family time together, especially on rainy weekends or school holidays.

The Repeating Crossbow was a total hit in our house, and we’re already looking forward to trying another project. It’s exactly the kind of activity that keeps kids off screens, thinking creatively, and proud of what they’ve made.
