Bring a touch of the tropics into your home with these DIY appliqué monstera leaf cushions. Using your Cricut Maker (or Cricut Maker 3) to cut out fabric leaves makes this sewing project quick and accurate, even for beginners. The finished cushion covers are stylish, modern, and make a great gift for birthdays, Christmas, or a new home.

I wanted to really put the machine through its paces so cut out a couple of complex shapes with cuts inside of the cuts and these monstera leaves were perfect. Even more so as I had the perfect fabric for them too by Lucy Engles.
How to make Applique Monstera Leaf Cushions using The Cricut Maker

Cutting out is my kryptonite when it comes to applique – I find it challenging
Instructions

The pink mat is specifically designed for fabric and I used a brayer to ensure good stick across the piece.

I used a 12 by 24 mat as I wanted my leafs larger than the 12 inches so the stem went right to the edge of the cushions

I inserted the rotary cutter and then chose the fabric – this was 100% quilting weight cotton and watched the Maker do

Just look at how precise that cut is. Plus the second one is just the same – no human cutting error. The edges are amazing.

I cut the cushion fabric 12.5 inches square and then the back pieces 12.5 square by 8 inches times two so I could turn them in to envelope backs.

Now I appliqued the leaves on to the cushion fronts. I used a zigzag stitch but with a short stitch length. The best thing to do is experiment on your machine before choosing. To keep the leaf stable I used a water based glue pen to temporatly stick the two layers.

I chose to use a darker thread and also an open to foot so I could see what I was doing.

Then I sandwiched the

I echoed the leaf pattern with grey thread.

Then I added an envelope back to the rear.

They turned out ace and these are all packaged up now ready to go in the post tomorrow for a close friend.

I can see myself doing lots of different appliques now and the boys’ have asked for monogrammed cushions for their rooms already.
