Easy No-Yeast Pizza Base Recipe

We love pizza here, it is a weekly tradition, but during lockdown, yeast was in short supply. So I adapted a naan bread recipe to make an easy no-yeast pizza base. My boys have been making pizza since they were little and I also have a fabulous pizza dough that is perfect for making in a bread maker.

No yeast pizza To the oven in under 15 minutes

Pizza was one of those things I learned to cook from scratch when I got married and then when the children were born pizza was a great way to get them to try other foods as toppings. Over the years pizza has become a weekly tradition and one that we all love. As much as I have tried to buy ready-made pizza, my boys say it isn’t a nice as we always revert back to homemade pizza dough.

This yeast free pizza base is perfect for when you need pizza fast and it is a passable replacement for my more traditional pizza base, although if you have yeast and time (50 minutes) I would go with my bread maker pizza base as the pizza crust is unbeatable.

This easy no-yeast dough pizza base is one I would make with children as it is fun to make and they can do it themselves. Plus it is easy to roll too, but you do have to par-cook before adding the toppings to it as it becomes a little stodgy!

Easy no-yeast pizza

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 12 minutes

Ingredients

For the Pizza Dough

  • 300 g self-raising flour plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 300 g natural yoghurt We prefer Greek

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
  2. Pour in the yoghurt the stir with a fork to combine or use a dough hook in your mixer.

  3. Allow to stand – I just cover the mixing bowl with a damp tea towel. The dough will not rise like dough with yeast in it.

  4. When the mixture forms a rough dough, turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead to form a smooth ball.
  5. Divide the dough into 2 equal pieces and roll out into thin circles.
  6. When making with children I prefer to par-cook the dough in a dry frying pan which will give a more sturdy base.

Recipe Notes

You can keep the dough in the fridge for 3 days. You need to put in an airtight container and take out and allow to come to room temperature before rolling.

It will keep in the freezer, however, it is so easy to make. Roll out and freeze flat.

Pizza is a weekly tradition here and this easy no-yeast pizza base means you can go from ingredient to the oven in 15 minutes.

As you can see this is a healthy recipe as you use yoghurt instead of olive oil and water. You could also substitute some of the white flour for whole wheat flour, but it will need more yoghurt. This no yeast pizza dough recipe is also great for gluten-free just change the flour.

When it comes to toppings, we are pretty easygoing. You can find our The Ultimate Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe, but if I don’t have any then I use passata then I will make my own tomato sauce by mixing in some dried herbs (oregano, garlic salt, basil), a pinch of sugar and cooking until it reduces (about five minutes), however, as this is a cheats pizza base I love using tomato & garlic puree. You have to remember that without the yeast the base can be a little bland.

My boys like margarita (plain mozzarella cheese and tomato), salami, pepperoni, peppers, onions and fresh basil. I love veggie pizza myself.

The Secret to a crispy pizza base is the baking sheet you use – we use pizza mesh (UK Link/US Link) and have for years.

We also use this pizza mesh’s in our outdoor pizza oven. Also why not take a look at this fab fun pizza cutter in the shape of a retro scooter will slice through pizza like a Vespa through gridlocked Italian traffic.
