Author name: Jen Walshaw

Mum-in-charge Jen Walshaw runs the UK’s top parenting blog Mum in the Madhouse, and she describes herself as a “fat, feisty and over 50” Northerner. Based in North Yorkshire, she’s mum to young adults and a big believer that family life is messy, creative and fun. In 2009 a double mastectomy gave her the nudge to start blogging; with two boys under three she needed an outlet and a digital scrapbook to capture their chaos.Jen’s posts are a mix of crafts, kid‑friendly recipes and honest parenting, peppered with northern humour. She’s happiest when up to her elbows in tea, fabric and pizza dough – sewing and making homemade gifts – before sneaking off to write about it. As a proud Northerner she warns PRs that a “quick pop down to London” isn’t quick at all. Her blog has earned her a stack of accolades, including the Cision #1 Mummy Blogger title in 2024 and consistently topping Vuelio and Tots100 parenting‑blog charts. Whether she’s advocating for diversity and body neutrality or sharing tales of parenting teens, Jen keeps things chatty, real and refreshingly down‑to‑earth.

Disney on Ice: Magical Performances and What to Expect

We were lucky enough to be invited to watch the opening night of this years Disney on Ice at the Metro Arena Newcastle. Both the boys adore Disney and we have never been to anything like this as a family, so had no expectations. I have to say that we adored it, The boys were spellbound at the characters and even more so that they were on ice!

All their favorites were there, including Cars, Tinkerbell (who Mini adores with a passion), The Little Mermaid and many, many more. It is such a slick performance (not that I would expect any less from Disney) and perfectly magical. A great family event.

Keeping your children warm, without turning up the heating

With the price of fuel going up and up and up, it is important to me that we make savings where we can and with this in mind I wrote a post at Ready fro Ten about helping to stem the cost of soaring fuel prices. The thing for me is I am happy to try and save money, but I would never put the boys at risk by being too cold, however, you can make changes which mean you can leave the heating off for a little longer.

Layer up
I am a big fan of lots of thin layers, which trap the warn air. We do this with thermal vests and long johns (bought from Aldi), then PJ’s and then dressing gowns. The boys were soft bedsocks to keep their feet warm when in bed.

Half Term at the National Railway Museum York: Fun and Educational Activities

We are no strangers to the National Railway Museum in York, in fact I visited the NRM this time last year with Sandy and her boys from Baby Baby.

This half term the museum is celebrating Big fun with little trains and we were given the opportunity to have a look round and experience some of the attractions with the boys. Entry to the Museum is free and parking is around £10 for the day and you really do not need to spend anymore than that if you take a picnic with you. There are places both indoors and outdoors for you to eat any picnic you might take, which is what we usually do.

However, this time we were treated to a free meal in the restaurant, which was a little hit and miss. We made sure we got the restaurant early as the queues can be terrible, so were served pretty quickly, however, MadDad’s cobbler wasn’t all that nice and had quite a bit of gristle in it. The boys and I had fishcakes and they were really nice, but I would expect no less when paying £7.99 for an adults meal and £5.99 for a children s meal, plus drinks. The boys also had a chocolate muffin each, which I paid for at just under £5 for the two. The tea in the restaurant is great, as it is made with real leaves and teapots, so right up my street.

There is something for every age this half term at the museum. If you have younger children there is a hands on Chuggington area, where they can play with the range of toys and have loads of fun. even my boys at 5 and 6 enjoyed it.

There are loads of model railways dotted around the Great Hall and the volunteers and demonstrators are really knowledgeable and really talk to the children a

The Homework Conversation: Why I Don’t Enforce Homework in Primary School

Tuesday evening is parents evening for the boys and I am going to have to have THAT conversation about homework again. What conversation are you thinking…. Well at five and six, I just do not see the need for my boys to do homework.
I want my children to learn by play, not to be forced to do homework unwilling. When you look back to your childhood, can you remember doing homework at Primary school? I cannot. Homework was something that happened to me in Senior school and I am keen to keep my boys childhoods just that, childhoods. I do not feel the need to hot house them, or to force them to learn unless they are falling behind their peers.

LEGO Duplo Cars 2 and an Amazing Competition

o matter how many times I profess my love of LEGO Duplo and LEGO, I just don’t think I can put into words just how much we love it as a family. Yes we are opn the cusp of the top end of the age range for LEGO Duplo, but due to the fact that it is compatable with LEGO (yes you can connect and interchange the bricks) it is still one of the most played with toys in The Mad House.

We were sent a super duper selection of LEGO Duplo Cars 2 sets to play with as part of the expert program. Rather than do a straight review of the kits (which are fabtastic), I thought I would give you a run down on why we love it so much:

Morphy Richards Intellisteam Review: Efficient and Versatile Steaming

So I was really excited to be sent the Morphy Richards Intellisteam, especially as all my vegetables are ready for harvesting in the garden. The intellisteam is unique as it has three compartments in which you can steam different foods and you can also set the compartments for different times and the steamer will ensure that they all finish at the same time, which means your food will be perfectly cooked and ready to serve at the same time.
