Author name: Jen Walshaw

Mum-in-charge Jen Walshaw runs the UK’s top parenting blog Mum in the Madhouse, and she describes herself as a “fat, feisty and over 50” Northerner. Based in North Yorkshire, she’s mum to young adults and a big believer that family life is messy, creative and fun. In 2009 a double mastectomy gave her the nudge to start blogging; with two boys under three she needed an outlet and a digital scrapbook to capture their chaos.Jen’s posts are a mix of crafts, kid‑friendly recipes and honest parenting, peppered with northern humour. She’s happiest when up to her elbows in tea, fabric and pizza dough – sewing and making homemade gifts – before sneaking off to write about it. As a proud Northerner she warns PRs that a “quick pop down to London” isn’t quick at all. Her blog has earned her a stack of accolades, including the Cision #1 Mummy Blogger title in 2024 and consistently topping Vuelio and Tots100 parenting‑blog charts. Whether she’s advocating for diversity and body neutrality or sharing tales of parenting teens, Jen keeps things chatty, real and refreshingly down‑to‑earth.

0 Reasons I Wear Shoes in the House: Avoiding LEGO and More

We have wooden floor downstairs and carpet upstairs.

LEGO. Have you ever trodden on a lego brick, nuff said!
Little plastic soldiers. As painful as LEGO, but not as durable, so not only do you end up with a sore foot, but an unhappy child too
Paper. The last time I slipped on a piece of paper I broke my big toe. On wooden floors, paper or magizines means a slip hazzard and you will often find me legs akimbo on the floor
Wet patches. Thankfully now my boys are five and six these patches tend to be drink, but in the olden days you never knew what you might be stood in (I will leave that to your imagination)
Cars. Oh yes cars can soon have you propelled across a room at breakneck speed too

Give a child a breakfast and win a years supply of breakfast for your child’s breakfast club

I have discussed before on this blog why breakfasts for children are so important and the fact that 1.7 million children did not eat breakfast. Kelloggs have just completed some further research in to breakfasts with UK children and the results are equally shocking:

1 in 7 UK children do not eat breakfast in the mornings – rises to 1 in 5 of secondary school children
The main reason school children skip breakfast because they have no time in the morning
UK Children spend £650m each year on buying food in shops on the way to school –
25% of children eat crisps, chocolate or burgers on the way to school
1 in 4 girls at secondary school skip breakfast and 14% of them do so because

Eating Me Out of House and Home: The Need for After-School Snacks

We were also sent some Cars 2 lunch boxes from Clintons back to school range over the summer. Mini had a day out last week, which required a lunch box and he decided that he wanted to use the Mater box, which is a pretty unusual shape, but actually it is a great shape for taking drinks upright and took all his lunch with room to spare, plus the great thing was that no other cold had one the same, which meant that it was easy to identify. The lunch box had a pull out handle, which made it easy to carry too.

Back to School with Tesco Clothing: Stylish and Affordable Uniforms

have to admit the set that we got from Tesco Clothing was a godsend last year and the shirts and polo’s washed really well. As last years trousers didnt have adjustable wastes they fell down on my stick insect children, but this year they sent us a pair of the finnest trousers for each of the boys, which have adjustable waists and are a wool blend, so quite luxurious and hard wearning.

Not only did they send a uniform set for each of the boys, but they also gave me a £30 voucher (which I have spent on a dress for The Mad Blog Awards).

Giveaway
I also have a code to give a lucky reader and commenter their own £15 voucher for Clothing at Tesco. Al you have to do is leave a comment on this post and I will draw the winner by randum number generator tomorrow night (29/08/11) at 8.0opm.
