Author name: Jen Walshaw

Mum-in-charge Jen Walshaw runs the UK’s top parenting blog Mum in the Madhouse, and she describes herself as a “fat, feisty and over 50” Northerner. Based in North Yorkshire, she’s mum to young adults and a big believer that family life is messy, creative and fun. In 2009 a double mastectomy gave her the nudge to start blogging; with two boys under three she needed an outlet and a digital scrapbook to capture their chaos.Jen’s posts are a mix of crafts, kid‑friendly recipes and honest parenting, peppered with northern humour. She’s happiest when up to her elbows in tea, fabric and pizza dough – sewing and making homemade gifts – before sneaking off to write about it. As a proud Northerner she warns PRs that a “quick pop down to London” isn’t quick at all. Her blog has earned her a stack of accolades, including the Cision #1 Mummy Blogger title in 2024 and consistently topping Vuelio and Tots100 parenting‑blog charts. Whether she’s advocating for diversity and body neutrality or sharing tales of parenting teens, Jen keeps things chatty, real and refreshingly down‑to‑earth.

For the Love of LEGO: Why My Boys Are Obsessed with LEGO

We are a Lego House, I was a Lego girl and I still have the rooms for the Lego house in the loft. I am thinking about bringing them down for the boys to play with, but the truth is, they still bold too many precious memories for me to do that yet, I need to hold on to them a little longer.

But just because I haven’t shared by vintage set with the boys doesn’t mean that they don’t love Lego. There favorite type at the moment is Lego Nijago, which is an interactive Lego that you can battle with and boy do they battle. The whole street are hooked on the stuff and the boys rush in from school and grab their spinners, cards and figures and off they go. When they are not battling with them, they are using them in Garrmadon’s dark fortress. They really do seem to have got into the whole Ninjago thing. Yes my boys are younger and they don’t use the cards correctly and they make sure that they come home with the same weapons that they go out with, but they love it.

I am slowly learning about it, the forces of good and evil and the four elements of spinjitzu.

This is Mini, he is my future …..

How many parents, can say that in the third world? Well if I tell you that 8 million children under five every year die from preventable illness, such as pneumonia and diarrhoea. No Child is born to Die.

Save The Children is focusing on the provision of vaccinations and health care workers. In June there is a meeting in London hosted by David Cameron and attended by other world leaders. Save The Children aims to make as much noise as possible to ensure the funding shortfall for vaccinations (4.7 billion) is met by all the donor countries.
