I don’t know about your children but mine are both really conscious of the planet we live on and have been really affected by the recent drowning in plastic documentary.  I find that often people buy teenagers tat to fill stockings due to them mainly wanting money or “big ticket” items at Christmas. Toothbrushes, toothpaste and Floss

Ever since I was little I always got a new toothbrush in my stocking (well pillowcase) and it is something that I have continued with the boys.  Mini is really fussy when it comes to toothbrushes, but Natasha sent us a truthbrush and some Hydrophil Bamboo Toothbrushes.  Mini claimed the truthbrush as his favourite.  We have also been using the truthpaste and to be honest, it is either love or hate with us split 50/50 on it! I love it and haven’t had an ulcer since starting using it (perhaps that is the fact that it is SLS free).  Mini also loves the texture but finds it rather strong, but will use it.  MadDad loves the taste and is more than happy to use it, but we need to find something less powerful in taste for Maxi.  The Geoorganics natural dental floss has been an all-round hit.

Shaving Stuff

Maxi is just getting to the age where he is going to start shaving, so when he does I am keen to go down the ethical route. We were sent a bamboo handled double edge safety razor currently on offer at £18 and orange and lavender shaving soap.  

Maddad and I have both tried the razor and I am sold on it and have claimed it and the soap for my needs and we will be purchasing Maxi his own when he starts shaving.  We all love the smell of the shaving soap and the only improvement we would make is to have it circular to fit in the shaving soap dish we already have! I can not see me ever needing to buy another razor just razor blades.  Bar soap is something we already use so moving to a bar for shaving soap is no biggie at all.

The new nature oil shaving kit comes with a natural shaving oil, a rosewood safety razor and a pack of 10 razor blades all packed inside a cotton drawstring bag. I have one that prefers shaving with oil, so this is ace and I am going to share this is what I have been using to shave my legs!

Personal Hygiene

One of the things that we have been really impressed with is the deodorant.  I am not going to lie but I wasn’t keen on the boys using jar deodorant as I know that they just wouldn’t always wash their hands after and didn’t didnt even think that there would be a plastic free stick deodorant.  Well, the Earth Conscious Stick Deodorant has been a revelation and a huge hit and we will all be moving to them once our current deodorants are used up.  They have been perfect for popping in the boys’ PE bags and also they work.

Now, these makeup pads are just amazing.  I have already added some more on to my Christmas list as they are soft and simple to use and I am happy to totally replace our cotton pads with them.  They would be a brilliant buy for my teenage nieces. The same with the cotton swabs which we use so infrequently anyway so am happy to make a straight swap.

Drinking 

I have left the best till last and believe it or not the Stojo collapsable cup has been the biggest hit with Maxi claiming it and taking it to school with him every day.  He takes it on the bus with a hot chocolate in and uses it at school too.  Mini has already requested one with a straw for his Christmas gift this year. I had to pinch this from his school blazer pocket to take a photo of it which shows firstly how small it folds and secondly just how much he likes it!

We moved to metal straws over the summer and haven’t looked back.  We went to paper ones a couple of years ago but sometimes they do go soggy, whereas the metal ones are ace.  We each have our own and I have been known to take them out with us in my bag!

I wish that Modi Body period pants had been around when I was a teen. These fabulous Modi Body Red (designed specifically for teenagers) mean fewer disposable pads, liners and tampons and positive change for the planet.

I’ve gathered some of our favourite reads — from timeless picture books to gripping YA novels — that would make wonderful Christmas gifts. Some are old classics, others are exciting new releases, but all are stories worth sharing.

Picture Books

You can’t go wrong with Julia Donaldson — her stories have stood the test of time in our house. Room on the Broom, Zog, The Snail and the Whale, and of course The Gruffalo are firm favourites for a reason.

Another classic that never gets old is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle — it’s one of those books that every child should have on their shelf.

A newer title worth checking out is The Full Stop That Got Away by Laura Baker — a lovely recommendation from a writer friend who knows her way around a good picture book.

Lower Grade (Ages 6–9)

It’s been a few years since I worked in a primary school, but some stories are simply timeless. The Twits by Roald Dahl always gets a giggle, and The 13-Storey Treehouse series remains a big hit with junior school kids — the sillier, the better!

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo is a beautiful story of love, loss and adventure — one to read with your child, as it’s as moving for grown-ups as it is for little ones.

Varjak Paw by SF Said follows a brave blue cat on a dangerous adventure, and The Monster Spotter’s Handbook by Matt Cherry is perfect for monster lovers who enjoy a good laugh.

And if you’re after a magical world to escape into, The Land of Roar is full of imagination, mythical creatures, and plenty of bravery.

Middle Grade (Ages 9–12)

If you’ve got a confident reader at home, these are some real page-turners:

Kick by Mitch Johnson is a brilliant, heartfelt story that’s a favourite with boys.

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is full of Greek mythology, monsters and quests — once they start, they’ll be hooked.

Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell takes you into a breathtaking fantasy world, and her follow-up The Poisoned King is top of my reading list.

Skandar and the Unicorn Thief by A.F. Steadman flips everything you think you know about unicorns — these are fierce, untamed beasts!

The House With Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson is a moving, magical story about belonging and friendship.

And if you haven’t yet read Tyger by SF Said, make sure you do — it’s a beautifully written, powerful tale set in a dystopian London.

Play by Luke Palmer beautifully captures the ups and downs of friendship as boys grow into young men.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is packed with puzzles, secrets and inheritance drama — think Knives Out for teens.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas and The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han are both hugely popular (and TV favourites).

We recently made the Repeating Crossbow, and it was such a fun and engaging build from start to finish. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, and it struck that perfect balance between being challenging enough to hold Maxi and Mini’s attention, but still achievable without frustration.

Consoles, games and accessories

Maxi is currently studying for his A’levels and we have one of these fabulous Mobile Pixels monitors which attach to his laptop to give him a dual display. We have The DUEX Plus portable laptop monitor with a full HD display (and a blue light filter) of 13.3”. The DUEX monitor is attached to Maxi’s laptop with powerful magnets. It is just over half a kilogram in weight and ultra-thin, making it a brilliant addition to any teens laptop. It took longer to attach the monitor than to use it (it has plug-and-play software and connects with USB-C or USB-A ports). You can also buy additional magnets so you can use it on more than one laptop. Once attached you can rotate it, so it can be on the right or left hand side and you can also use it in portrait mode or even detach it and use it as a stand-alone monitor in presentation mode.

It is totally ingenious and really brings the laptop into the modern age – allowing a dual-screen solution utilising your existing laptop. I used dual screens at home and love how this is a solution for upgrading on the go – Oh, it works on Mac too as well as Windows, Nintendo Switch and Android phones.

Gaming

I think at this age you tend to be either an Xbox or a PlayStation family. Frankly, very few can afford to have both! And 2020 brought us all new consoles from both manufacturers.

Xbox Wireless Controller

Apparently, you can never have enough controllers. Both of the boys have put new ones on their Christmas lists this year. (UK Link/US Link) . Let’s talk about clothing Brands

When it comes to clothes and teen boys, nothing is inexpensive, unfortunately! Brands that top my boy’s lists are CP Company, Nike (tech fleece tracksuits) Jordon clothing (Maxi), Jodon 1 mid tops, Adidas Spezial’s (mini), Stone Island Jumpers (black or Navy), 9N1M SENSE Clothing Maxi loves the hoodies and graphic T’s, Northface Coats, Champion or Nike Socks. Other acceptable brands are Lyle & Scott, Pretty Green, Weekend Offender Cortiez, Trapstar, Carhartt, Levi do great T-shirts, Essentials Fear of God, Adidas, Champion, Fred Perry and Uniglow for basic t-shirts. When it comes to PJ’s they only want bottoms or shorts and they have to be super soft with drawstrings that go all the way through.

When it comes to jeans Mini loves FCUK ones and we always check out TKMaxx for them as they are half the price. Whilst Maxi is a fan of Urban Outfitters DBG Jeans.

My boys have no issue with preloved and last season’s colours when it comes to clothes. So keep an eye out on Depop, Vimted, and StockEx for trainers. Vintage football tops are also a big hit here and Classic Football Shirts is a great place to pick some up. Just make sure you get the right club and if you are unsure then it is safer to go for an international one.

You can not go wrong with Calvin Klein Underpants, however, this year my 16-year-old wants Hugo Boss ones. Again these were from Mainline Menswear, cheaper than the chains and with fabulous delivery. I can not praise Mainline enough. All of the branded stuff the boys wanted this year is from there and for less than chains with free next-day delivery. Both of my boys prefer lightweight trunk-style underwear. Maxi really isn’t bothered about branding and his favourites are the fruit of the loom ones from the US.

Both my lads love Champion socks and I can attest to their washability. We also have Nike and Adidas Socks too.

Apparently, old school is cool again and this heritage Nike Backpack is on my 15-year-olds wish list this Christmas. My top tip for you is to avoid the big stores and look for an independent. We got this from Mainline Menswear for the same price but free next day delivery.

Whilst we are talking clothes the eldest has an Oodie. We have tried the imitations and they are not as good or as warm (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise). Maxi has a plain blue one and it is so much better made, fully lined and warmer than the imitations. Mini opted for a wearable blanket from Marks and Spencer and he loves it.

The CREP PROTECT Ultimate Oxford Bundle is a super practical gift for any teen who wears sneakers (so, that’s pretty much everyone!). It tackles the everyday battle against scuffs, stains and muddy puddles by combining a premium protector spray with cleaning tools — so their favourite kicks stay looking fresh. It’s one of those gifts that seems low-key but ends up being a hero on rainy days, school commutes, or after that unavoidable grass stain.

Young Driver Lesson

Anyone aged 10 and over and above 1.42 metres tall can get behind the wheel of a brand new dual control Vauxhall Corsa SRi car with a fully qualified ADI driving instructor. When it comes to a cleanser both my boys use La Roche Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel and we buy the Big bottle!

If you are looking for a simple and inexpensive moisturiser then you can not go wrong with The Altruist. Their Moisturising Fluid which at £6 is amazing value. I have also been using their Anti-Redness SPF 50 and I rave about it!

Maxi loves Liz Earle Gel Cream which is good value at Look Fantastic and a great day cream with a gel consistency.

My Clarins is the teenage range of Clarins and this My Clarins Re-Charge Sleep Mask is a night cream that you only use a couple of times a week and it gives soft skin without being too rich and exacerbating any acne.

West Barn Co Hydro Dots and Hydro-Patches are both made with hydrocolloid and 1% salicylic acid to clear out those oily pores and stop spots in their nefarious tracks. Maxi loves these and I stock up in the sales.

When it comes to SPF for the face Maxi’s first choice will always be Fenty but it is expensive, however, they do offer a refill. If I am not feeling flush then it is La Roche-Posay Anthelios at half the price!

Another low-cost part of the boys’ skincare routine is toner and I swear by Aldi Lacura Healthy Glow Glycolic Toner at £2.99.

2 out of 3 men in this house have a Braun Series 3 ProSkin Electric Shaver – It is a great initial electric shaver that can be used wet or dry and has a trimmer too.

The other really taytes his Philips OneBlade – not only for his face but also for manscaping. The blade are expensive but last a good 12 months. 3

We rate Heath Save Cream which is a naturally-derived shaving cream enriched with soothing properties for a smoother shave. It is great value and I use it too.

One of the best gifts we got Mini last year was a subscrption to Harry’s – we got the razor with his initials on and then a subscription for blades and shaving foam.

I LOVE stationery and what is not to love when it is quilting-inspired? This beautiful birthday card features an Ohio Star and you can get it without a greeting too. Claire Paul Draws also sells this quilty washi tape for £3.50 and I adore it. My sewing machine is covered in stickers and Samatha Clarridge has some amazing ones including this haberdashery wreath sticker which is £2.20. Need a card to give with your gifts, this sew much fabric, sew little time one is very apt! A stitched with love stamp would make a great gift along with a fabric stamp pad. What about these sewing-themed pencils – I represent the “it’s a collection. not a stash”!

How does it work?

Your starter pack and letter from the Ocean comes with a fabulous world map poster so your child can pop it on their wall and chart Bango’s monthly journey with the stickers that are included each month.
