Mother’s Day always holds a special place in my heart as a Mum myself. It took a long time for us to have our children and my eldest was born just after Mother’s day. Failsafe Chocolate Fairy Cakes

These chocolate cupcakes are so simple to make that my boys can manage them all on their own. Turning them into fairy cakes with little chocolate wings makes them so forgiving if the bake isn’t perfect. Plus they are delicious with chocolate butter cream and the addition of some decorations.

Ingredients for Chocolate Fairy Cakes or Butterfly Cakes

Ingredients for Cakes:

• 135g salted butter at room temperature
• 135g caster sugar
• 2 Large Eggs
• 105g self-raising flour
• 30g cocoa powder
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

For the Chocolate butter Icing:

• 30g  cocoa powder
• 3 tablespoons milk
• 65g soft butter
• 175g icing sugar sifted
• 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment:

• Large Bowl
• Spoon
• Measuring spoon
• Weighing Scales
• Wire rack
• paper cases
• 12-hole bun tin
• Electric mixer

I love making fairy cakes or butterfly cakes with children, as they are super simple to make and really forgiving when it comes to icing.  This recipe is for 12 cakes.

Free Mother’s Day Colouring Cards

These free Mother’s Day colour cards are beautiful and simple to colour in, although if you are more talented than me you can shade them too.

It doesn’t matter if you have a Mum or a Mom, I have two options for you.

I used pencils on this first one and it took me about 15 minutes. I kept it really simple.  It really would be the perfect card for a tween or tween who doesn’t like making cards to give this mother’s day.

Maxi started colouring the next one and used gel pens.

I know that I would be delighted with this card on Mother’s Day.

There is nothing better than collecting the boys from school and them being really animated   “I have something in my bag for you Mum”, “So do I”.  As we get near home the boys get even more excited about it “I can not show you, it has to be a surprise” and the two of them whisper conspiratorially to themselves.

I am smiling big beaming smiles, as I know that Mothers Day is nearly upon us and this means they have both been busy creating their own special card for me.

Come Sunday morning and the boys loudly come running in to the bedroom with a cup of tea for me and their cards and jump on the bed and tell me all about their cards.  Maxi explains he drew round his left hand, but turned it over once he cut it out, so it looks like his left hand and how I have beautiful brown eyes and love heart lips for kissing.  Mini excitedly tells me he did all the cutting out himself and used a punch to make the tree.  He used zigzag scissors to cut out his label.
