Children’s bedrooms influence more than where sleep happens. These spaces affect how easily children settle, how deeply they rest, and how supported they feel at night. A well-considered bedroom environment helps regulate sleep patterns and supports emotional wellbeing.

For children who struggle to settle in the evening, small design choices can reduce excess light, limit noise, and improve comfort. These adjustments create the calm conditions children need for better sleep, which often leads to improved mood and focus during the day.

Improving sleep does not require a full bedroom makeover. Simple changes, applied consistently, often make the biggest difference to how children experience bedtime.

Why Sleep Environment Matters for Children

The physical environment of a child’s bedroom influences how quickly children fall asleep and how often sleep is interrupted, reinforcing why children need more sleep during key developmental stages. Temperature, light, and noise levels all play a role in sleep quality as children grow.

Many children experience disrupted sleep, and environmental factors often contribute. Cool, dim, and quiet conditions tend to support more settled nights, while disruptions can lead to frequent wakings.

Supporting a healthy sleep environment helps children’s brain development, learning, and emotional regulation. Children who sleep well often show better concentration, fewer behavioural challenges, and stronger overall health.

Colour Psychology for Better Sleep

Bedroom colours influence mood and bedtime behaviour. Certain shades promote relaxation, while others can stimulate the mind and delay sleep. Soft blues and greens are commonly associated with calmness, while bright or intense colours can increase alertness.

Blue creates a cool, calming effect, while green supports relaxation. Neutral tones such as warm whites, soft greys, and gentle beiges also work well by reducing visual stimulation. Colour coordination is easier when bedroom furniture and bedding are viewed together, which is why bed shop near me searches are often associated with complete bedroom displays rather than isolated items.

Bright reds, oranges, and strong purples are better used sparingly as accents rather than dominant colours. For children drawn to bold shades, smaller decorative elements help balance personal preference with sleep-friendly design.

<img decoding="async" width="870" height="1305" data-pin-url="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/transform-childrens-bedroom-better-sleep/?tp_image_id=163722" data-pin-title="7 Simple Bedroom Changes That Help Kids Sleep Better" data-pin-description="Struggling with bedtime battles or restless nights?

Quick Colour Updates Without Repainting

Introducing calming colours does not always require repainting walls. Removable decals and wall murals offer temporary solutions that refresh a room without permanent changes. Designs featuring soft blues or greens can shift the room’s tone quickly.

Updating bedding, curtains, and accessories also makes a noticeable difference. New duvet covers, pillowcases, and curtains in sleep-friendly colours help reinforce bedtime routines while blocking unwanted light.

These options suit rental homes well. Colour-adjustable light bulbs provide another flexible way to create warmer evening lighting that supports sleep without altering fixtures.

Lighting Solutions for Sleep Regulation

Light strongly influences children’s sleep cycles by shaping the sleep rhythm. Bright light signals alertness, while dim lighting encourages sleep, supporting healthy transitions between daytime activity and nighttime rest.

Morning exposure to natural light helps children wake and feel alert. In the evening, reducing brightness allows the body to prepare for rest. During UK summer months, extended daylight can interfere with bedtime, making effective window coverings especially important.

Smart lighting systems allow gradual dimming as bedtime approaches. Controlled lighting helps create a predictable transition from daytime activity to nighttime rest.

DIY Blackout Solutions

Blackout solutions are particularly useful in UK homes during lighter evenings, where light pollution can interfere with children’s ability to settle and fall asleep. Blackout curtains with thermal linings help block light and regulate temperature.

Temporary blackout blinds made with removable fixings work well for short-term needs or travel. Light leaks around doors and windows can reduce effectiveness, so draft excluders and blackout tape help limit unwanted brightness.

Creating Comfort Zones with Bedding and Mattresses

Supportive mattresses and breathable bedding play an important role in children’s sleep. Support needs change as children grow, so mattresses should match age and body weight while allowing airflow.

Pillows should support the neck without forcing the head forward. Low to medium loft pillows usually suit children best, as they help maintain comfortable alignment overnight. This type of support plays a role in postural care for children, particularly as sleeping positions and body proportions change with age. For allergies, hypoallergenic bedding and washable mattress protectors help reduce irritation.

Weighted blankets can help some children feel secure, but they should only be used when children can move them independently and remain comfortable throughout the night.

<img decoding="async" width="870" height="1305" data-pin-url="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/transform-childrens-bedroom-better-sleep/?tp_image_id=163723" data-pin-title="How to Create a Calm, Sleep-Friendly Bedroom for Children" data-pin-description="A child’s bedroom affects how well they sleep, settle, and rest.

Sound Management for Peaceful Sleep

Noise affects sleep quality even at low levels, particularly in children who are sensitive to sudden or unfamiliar sounds, reflecting the effects of sound on sleep throughout the night. Reducing background noise helps children fall asleep more easily and maintain more settled sleep overnight.

Soft furnishings such as rugs, curtains, and fabric wall hangings absorb sound and reduce echo in bedrooms with hard surfaces. Bookshelves filled with books also help dampen noise while providing practical storage, making rooms feel quieter and more contained at bedtime.

A sleep-friendly bedroom supports both comfort and routine. Room temperature should remain comfortable overnight, while blackout solutions help limit outside light that may interfere with sleep. Mattresses and bedding should suit the child’s age and support needs, allowing proper airflow and comfort.

Electronic devices with LED lights can disrupt settling and should be limited in sleeping areas. Wall colours work best when they feel calming rather than stimulating, and lighting should dim easily as bedtime approaches. Keeping floors and surfaces uncluttered also reduces visual distraction, helping children associate their bedroom with rest rather than activity.

Sleep-Promoting Colour Suggestions

Soft Sky Blue supports calm and relaxation. Sage Green creates a natural, soothing effect. Lavender Mist offers gentle tranquillity without overstimulation. Warm Beige and Pale Grey provide neutral backdrops that work well with sleep-friendly accessories.

These shades work best when applied consistently across walls, bedding, and soft furnishings, helping reinforce a calm and predictable sleep environment.

Maintaining a sleep-friendly bedroom for children is less about perfection and more about consistency. Small, thoughtful adjustments to colour, lighting, sound, and comfort can significantly improve how easily children settle and how well they rest through the night.

By reducing overstimulation, supporting healthy sleep rhythms, and creating calm, predictable surroundings, parents help children associate their bedroom with rest rather than activity. Over time, these choices support better mood, focus, and emotional balance during the day.

A bedroom designed with sleep in mind becomes a steady foundation for healthy routines. With the right environment in place, bedtime feels calmer, nights become more settled, and rest becomes a natural part of everyday family life.

Prioritise Sleep

Sure, it might seem like a no-brainer, but prioritising sleep is a commitment that often falls by the wayside. Make sleep as important as your work meetings and family outings. Mark a consistent sleep schedule on your calendar and stick to it, even on weekends.

To make this a family affair, create a communal sleep schedule. This routine can promote better sleep for everyone and offer dedicated time for family activities. When sleep is a priority, you’ll be surprised at how much more attentive and involved you become with your family.

Sleep Environment

Turning your bedroom into a sanctuary can significantly affect your sleep quality. Remove clutter, add soothing colours, and make sure the room is well-ventilated. Minimising distractions like electronic devices can also contribute to a tranquil atmosphere.

Involve your family in transforming sleep spaces. Whether it’s picking out new curtains for the kids’ rooms or rearranging furniture, making it a family project can be both fun and beneficial. A calming environment will help everyone settle down easier, enhancing sleep quality.

Nutritional Choices

We’ve all heard the adage, ‘You are what you eat’, but have you considered the impact of your diet on your sleep? Foods rich in magnesium, such as leafy greens, can promote better sleep. On the flip side, avoid caffeine and sugar before bedtime, as they can disturb your sleep cycle.

Family mealtimes provide a golden opportunity to incorporate these changes. Preparing nutritious, sleep-promoting meals together can create a great bonding experience. Plus, when everyone is eating better, sleep quality is likely to improve collectively.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is not just good for your physique; it also has a remarkable impact on your sleep. Moderate exercise during the day can help you fall asleep quicker and enjoy deeper sleep. However, try to avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime.

To get the whole family moving, why not make exercise a group activity? Whether it’s a walk in the park, a bike ride, or a dance-off in your living room, making it a family routine will improve everyone’s sleep and overall health.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness practices like meditation and deep breathing exercises can set the stage for restful sleep. Just a few minutes each day can decrease stress levels, making it easier to drift off at night.

Why not make mindfulness a family ritual? Dedicate a few minutes before bedtime for relaxation techniques. This can serve as quality time together and promote a peaceful night’s sleep for everyone involved.

Choose the Right Bedding

Choosing the right mattress and pillows can make a world of difference. Companies like Bed Kingdom offer an array of beds and bedding to suit various comfort needs. The material, firmness, and type of mattress all contribute to how well you sleep.

For families, it may be worth investing in quality beds for each family member. Individual comfort preferences can be addressed, ensuring that everyone has their own sleep sanctuary to retire to each night.

Consistent Bedtime Routine

Establishing a consistent bedtime routine can serve as a signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. Activities like reading or a warm bath can facilitate this transition.

This is another area where family involvement can be beneficial. Create shared bedtime routines, such as reading a book together or having a gentle stretching session. These activities not only improve sleep but also build family bonds.

Maintain Optimal Room Temperature

Temperature can significantly affect your sleep. An overly warm or cold room can make it challenging to fall and stay asleep. Keep your bedroom at a comfortable, slightly cool temperature for optimal sleep conditions.

In family settings, individual preferences may vary. Portable fans or individual blankets can be a solution. Everyone can then adjust their sleeping environment to their liking, contributing to a restful night for all.

Sound and Light Control

Even minor disturbances like a ticking clock or a sliver of light can impact your sleep. Invest in blackout curtains and perhaps some white noise machines to block out distracting noises.

As part of a family-wide sleep improvement project, allow each member to choose their preferred method of sound and light control. Personalising these elements can make bedtime more inviting, promoting better sleep across the board.

Hydration Levels

Being either overhydrated or dehydrated can disrupt your sleep. Aim for a balanced fluid intake throughout the day, but avoid drinking large amounts just before bedtime.

As a family, you could set hydration goals and help each other stick to them. Proper hydration will support better sleep and greater alertness during waking hours, enhancing the quality of family time spent together.

Power Naps and Daytime Rest

Although the focus is often on nighttime sleep, daytime rest can also play a role. Short power naps can be revitalising, but keep them brief to avoid affecting your nighttime sleep.

Encourage short rest periods or quiet time for family members, especially younger ones, during the day. This can be a great recharge moment for everyone, making the family more present and happier during shared activities.

Aromatherapy for Sleep

Essential oils like lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus have shown promise in facilitating sleep. Diffuse these scents in your bedroom to create a calming atmosphere that encourages restfulness. Involving your family in aromatherapy can also turn it into a delightful ritual. Let each family member choose their favourite scent or blend for their bedroom. This personal touch not only aids in better sleep but also creates an environment of family unity and personalised care.

Importance of Natural Light

Natural light plays a pivotal role in regulating our internal body clocks. Exposure to morning sunlight can help synchronise your circadian rhythms, making it easier to fall asleep when night comes. Aim for at least 20 minutes of natural light exposure in the morning.

Family morning walks or breakfasts in a sun-drenched spot can be perfect for soaking up that essential daylight. You’ll not only be doing your sleep patterns a favour but also filling the day with a slice of family togetherness right from the get-go.

Reduce Caffeine and Alcohol Intake

Both caffeine and alcohol can have disruptive effects on your sleep. Caffeine, often found in coffee and certain teas, can keep you awake for hours. Alcohol, although initially sedative, can result in fragmented sleep. It’s best to limit these substances, especially in the hours leading up to bedtime.

As adults, your choices in this regard can also serve as a teaching moment for older kids and teens. Discussing the impact of these substances on sleep quality can be an educational family conversation, leading to healthier choices for everyone involved.

Sleep-friendly Apparel

Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton are ideal for sleepwear. Avoid restrictive or heavy clothing that can lead to discomfort and disrupt your sleep cycle. When shopping for sleepwear, make it a family outing. Letting everyone pick their comfortable night attire can be both fun and instructive. Besides, when the whole family dresses for sleep success, you’re more likely to enjoy restful nights and energetic days together.

Final Thoughts

Improving your quality of sleep isn’t just a personal victory; it’s a win for the whole family. By incorporating these essential strategies into your daily life, you’ll be setting the stage for restful nights and more meaningful, energetic days with your loved ones. So, go ahead and prioritise that restorative sleep — your family will thank you!

How to get kids to sleep on Christmas eve is a collaborative post with DUSK Luxury Bedding to celebrate their Christmas Sleep Hub. As an adult, I know how hard it is to get to sleep on Christmas Eve and if I find it a challenge then I totally understand why my children struggle! The excitement, the anticipation and the joy all create a fizzing feeling that stops sleep. I think that Christmas Eve and Birthday Eve are the hardest night of the year to get children to go to sleep. So here are some of my tried and tested tips for getting children to sleep the night the Santa comes to visit.

<img decoding="async" width="870" height="870" data-pin-url="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/how-to-get-kids-to-sleep-on-christmas-eve/?tp_image_id=58782" data-pin-description="Getting kids to bed on a regular night is tough, but on the evenings before big events such as Christmas eve can feel pretty impossible, we share tips that work.

The benefit of getting the kids to sleep on Christmas Eve means that even if they get you up bright and early on Christmas Day that you will have at least been able to have some shut-eye. We all know that electronic devices, including iPad’s and phones, emit a spectrum of blue lights that disrupt sleep and it can be hard for children to get enough sleep normally without adding Christmas to the mix. Plus I don’t know about you, but I would love for Christmas eve to be a silent night!

Top Sleep Tips for Christmas Eve

Stick to your normal bedtime routine

As much as you can try to stick to your normal bedtime routine as we all know children thrive on regular routines so it will really help this time of year. So if you have a bath, book and bed then make your Christmas Eve bedtime routine the same Don’t worry if you want to add the magic, you can still add Christmas traditions to make it special, such as Reindeer food before beth, have a Christmas bath, with a festive bath bomb and read a festive bedtime story with the kids before bed. Also, a nice warm mug of hot chocolate will have a soothing effect and make sure you keep the same bedtime.

Get Outside with them

I always used to say that my boys were like puppies, they needed lots of exercise, good food and praise. Let the kids have the electronics and tablets earlier in the day and then exhaust excitable kids with some fresh air and fun. Take a family outing trip to the park, a walk to look at the Christmas lights or if you are lucky enough to have snow, then build a snowman and have a snowball fight.

Take time to relax

Christmas Eve can be really busy day and everyone in the family will benefit from some relaxation. Take a little extra time out to enjoy Christmas movies together or a family movie that you all love. For me, it was about making sure I pace the excitement and find a balance that works for all of us. My boys have always received a Christmas Eve parcel from the Elf which when they were smaller contained things to keep them occupied on Christmas eve without getting them over-excited.

Add Bedtime Distractions

I am a big fan of audiobooks for helping children get off to sleep. A story, podcast or relaxing music will give them something to focus on rather than worrying about getting to sleep, plus it will mask any noise around the house. If you have little children then using a white noise app often helps.

<img decoding="async" width="870" height="1305" data-pin-url="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/how-to-get-kids-to-sleep-on-christmas-eve/?tp_image_id=58784" data-pin-title="How to Get Kids to Sleep on Christmas Eve" data-pin-description="Getting kids to bed on a regular night is tough, but on the evenings before big events such as Christmas eve can feel pretty impossible, we share tips that work.
Other Tips for a Good Night Sleep

Other things that can help with sleep from the sleep experts include drinking Cherry Juice which has been proven to prolong sleep time and sleep efficiency for people with insomnia. This may be because tart cherry juice increases the bioavailability of tryptophan and increases your body’s production of melatonin.

Milk also contains tryptophan, which helps increase melatonin levels and induce sleep. Drinking warm milk before bed is also a soothing nighttime ritual. But not all warm drinks are helpful. You need to avoid anything with caffeine.

Pre bedtime Yoga can be really replacing and has been shown to help people sleep. Cosmic Kids Yoga on Youtube is really great fun and a fantastic way to calm your child’s mind and also be a distraction.

Personally, I think there is something relaxing after a bath getting into a bed with freshly laundered bedding and we are big fans of 100% cotton bedding like the Marseille Bed Linen Collection which I have winging its way to me!

It comes as no surprise to me and yes I see the irony that this post is being written at 2.21am in the morning as I have always suffered from insomnia, but my sleeping pattern or ability to sleep got much worse when I became a mum and my insomnia became “mumsomnia”.

It started pretty much from the moment we brought Maxi home. I had been told to sleep when the baby sleeps, but I couldn’t. For the first couple of weeks, I was wired. I survived on very little sleep and my house was pristine, I would be up ironing at 4 in the morning and I thought I was OK. From that point forward things got worse. Maxi wasn’t the best sleeper, he cried, a lot, all the time, night and day. Even when I managed to get to sleep the slightest sound from him had me wide awake and then it took hours to get back to sleep.

Then the crazy set in! I would stay awake, sure that the moment I fell asleep he would have me awake and that it was easier to just stay awake, yes, stay awake!

In the end, I sought professional help. It didn’t solve my insomnia, but it did give me tools to help me cope.

Five Insomnia Cures for Mums

Make your bedroom comfortable

I need dark, pitch-blackness preferably. So we have blackout blinds and we remove as much light from the room as possible. For me, this means taping over things that glow. Not having an alarm with light-up numbers or a clock that ticks and also shut doors. I wish I could cope with an eye mask, but it just bugs me!

Comfort is also about sound and I have real issues with noise. I have tried all sorts of earplugs and recently discovered QuietOn 3.1 Sleep Earbuds. They are an investment, but one I would be happy to make as nothing is better than sleep. My boys are teenagers now and I go to bed before them and often was awoken by one of them shouting when on their video games. That hasn’t happened once since I have been wearing Quieton Sleep Earbuds. I had also been waking at dawn and the dawn chorus was preventing me from going back to sleep. All I need do is pop them back in (as I seem to take them out when I am asleep) and the birds a silenced.

Ensure your bedroom is not too hot or too cold, scientists recommend just over 18C (65F).

Avoid Caffeine

Caffeine can stay in the bloodstream for 12 hours. I make sure that my last cup of tea or any drink with caffeine in is at 4pm. This works for me. Even green tea has caffeine in! Beware there is caffeine in things that you would never guess, Coca Cola do a fab caffeine counter.

Try Aromatherapy

Research has shown that lavender helps improve the quality of sleep. I have been using a Lumie Bodyclock Iris and love it. The Iris is unique as it combines the benefits of a gradual sunset and sunrise with aromatherapy diffusion. At night I diffuse Lavender oil with Roman Camomile. I really rate Neoms essential oils, the bedtime heroes (camomile, Ylang Ylang & Cedarwood) and Scent to sleep (Lavender, Basil and Jasmine) are both brilliant. You can get them both as pillow mists too (I have Who’s the Mummy to thank for introducing them to me).

Try to relax before going to bed

Have a warm bath, listen to quiet music or do some gentle yoga to relax the mind and body. Some people find white noise works well for them or reading before bed. Meditation can help too. One of the benefits of a Bodyclock is the fading sunset which helps me naturally unwind at bedtime. The sunset is a signal for your body to step up the production of the sleep hormone melatonin so you’re relaxed and ready for bed. I have had a Lumi light for 20 plus years and both the boys have one too.

Reduce exposure to screens and blue light

Light towards the blue end of the spectrum is especially bad for encouraging sleep. Computer screens, tablets, smartphones and LED lighting all emit blue light. We had a no screens after 6pm rule for the boys until they were 14. I know that I sleep better when I do not use screens late in the evening and I really need to practice what I preach more often. In fact, we have made the bedroom a technology-free zone as part of a challenge from Silentnight it is still that way 4 years later. We kept the boys’ bedrooms technology free until the pandemic.

If you have tried all of these, then I have some more tips for getting a good night’s sleep.

I wish I could tell you that my long-time insomnia has been cured, it hasn’t, but I am a lot more relaxed about not getting and staying asleep, which improved the quality of any sleep I receive.

What are your tips for curing insomnia?
