Here are our favourite late summer activity ideas, perfect for kids (and grown-ups) to soak up the last of the summer warmth and rhythm.

1. Press Flowers and Leaves

Capture nature’s fading beauty by collecting and pressing flowers and leaves. Use them for crafts, cards, or as part of a nature journal. Try it with hydrangeas, ferns, or leaves just starting to turn.

2. Collect Seeds

Nature’s seed cycle is in full swing. Gather seeds from sunflowers, poppies, or vegetables you’ve grown. Dry them out and save them for next spring’s planting—or make simple seed packets as gifts.

3. Go Foraging for Blackberries

Blackberries are a late summer treasure. Head to a local footpath or hedgerow with a basket and fill it with juicy berries. Make pies, smoothies, or even homemade blackberry cordial.

4. Embrace the Harvest

Whether it’s apples, plums, or garden veg—celebrate the seasonal harvest. Go apple picking or cook together using what you’ve gathered. Try making crumbles, stewed fruits, or dried apple rings.

5. Look for Bats at Dusk

Warm summer nights are perfect for bat spotting. Head out at dusk and look to the skies—bats often appear in gardens, parks, or near water. It’s a great way to introduce kids to nocturnal wildlife.

6. Go Rock Pooling

Visit the coast and explore tide pools. You might spot crabs, sea anemones, or little fish. Bring a bucket, magnifying glass, and plenty of curiosity! We have a free rock pooling scavenger hunt printable.

7. Make Rose Petal Jam

Got fragrant roses in the garden? Use the petals to make a delicate rose petal jam. It’s a lovely way to preserve floral scents and makes a sweet addition to toast or gifts.

8. Make Oak Gall Ink

Find oak leaves with round galls and try your hand at making natural ink—a fun and historical activity! This is a great science-meets-art project for older kids.

9. Collect and Press Seaweed

Next time you’re by the sea, gather flat seaweed types like bladderwrack or kelp and press them between sheets of paper for use in ocean-themed art or nature journals.

10. Look Out for Painted Lady Butterflies

Keep an eye out for these beautiful migratory butterflies in late summer as they travel north. Track sightings in your garden or create a butterfly-spotting log.

11. Turn Sunflowers into Bird Feeders

Let your sunflowers dry out, then hang the heads up for birds to feast on. You can also spread peanut butter on pinecones and roll them in seeds for DIY feeders.

12. Forage Meadowsweet

Meadowsweet is a late summer wildflower with a sweet, almond-like scent. It can be used in syrups or teas (always forage responsibly and double-check identification).

Free Summer Colouring Bookmarks

Not only are they a fun free printable to colour, they are great for promoting reading. Why not give a bookmark and book to colour in.  Simply mat the uncoloured bookmark on to cardstock and add a ribbon and then give it out for the recipient to colour.

For people like me, that love to colour but need some inspiration for what colours go together the pre-coloured flower colouring page is genius. Beat the heat with this fun hands-on frozen flowers sensory ice play – I know that when it comes to keeping kids occupied water is often the key and these beautiful nature ice cubes are a beautiful STEM sensory invitation to play whilst the children play with they will be exercising their fine motor controls and dexterity. Plus you can add a little science into the mix too depending on the age of the kids. Preschoolers are naturally inquisitive so this is a brilliant age for this activity

We have made ice treasures before where I froze small toys such as LEGO Minifigures, plastic animals and mini dinosaurs in yoghurt pots, which goes to show that you can use what you have and don’t need any special materials. I would think twice about using glitter, beads or sequins as kids do tend to put ice in their mouths and it is better to be safe.

Top Tip: Use food colouring to colour some of the water, this is taste-safe and a fun way to make colorful ice cubes

Frozen lowers sensory ice play doesn’t just have to be a summer activity (although it is perfect for warm days in the backyard or garden), why not free pinecones or other seasonal nature items and make it an all-year-round water or sensory table activity? I would just say that this can get a little messy, so if you are doing inside pop a couple of towels on the floor, alternately you could even introduce it to bath time!

You can freeze any flower type, but why not make an adventure from collecting them too and use seasonal ones like daisies, dandelions or buttercups?

How to Make Frozen Flowers Ice Cubes

Materials

• Flowers, leaves, pinecones, etc.
• Water
• Silicone mould or ice-cube tray

Instructions

1. Add the nature items into your mould.
2. Fill with water.
3. Freeze overnight.
4. Remove from mould and enjoy!  

How to make the ice cubes crystal clear?

It is really hard to make your ice cubes crystal clear. You would need to use a method called directional freezing, which is really difficult with a home freezer, however, there are a couple of things we can do to make it clearer.

Firstly boil and cool the water you are using. It is recommended to do this twice before using. Boiling the water helps eliminate air and impurities and leads to ice that is clearer than standard but is not crystal clear

Similar to boiled water, distilled water will not deliver crystal-clear ice. Distilled water is made by collecting steam from boiling water, which helps remove salts, minerals, and other organic materials found in tap water. Also tap water is free and distilled isn’t cheap!

Frozen Sensory Play Activity Tools

You don’t need to purchase lots of additional items to enhance this unique sensory experience for your kids. Eye droppers, old toothbrushes, a spray bottle with warm water would be enough or even a container of warm water and the syringes used for kids’ medication. However, if you do want to make it a little more interesting for your kids when they do their ice excavation then use motor tools such as tweezers and water droppers work so well. You could also give them a selection of ingredients to try and see if they make a difference like salt, sugar, lemon juice and vinegar and then discuss the chemical reactions.

I do not have an issue with my boys being bored, in fact I am more than happy for them to have time to become bored and to learn to occupy themselves.  Contrary to popular belief, I am not supermum and I do not spend every waking minute filling my boys lives up with crafts and supervised activities.  What I want to do is help the boys find things that they enjoy and to stop their first choice being a screen.

A lot of the boys’ summer is spent outdoors with friends, playing football, cricket, cycling and just generally having fun out and about.  The bored jar comes in to its own on days when we are stuck inside and I have to catch up on some work.

I love that you can have a bored jar to suit all ages or type of child.  I think they are a fab alternative to a summer bucket list.

We started using one when they were in preschool before they could read and I had little images that I velcroed onto the planner. Over the years that evolved and I have quite the selection of summer printables to share with you that will help keep the kids entertained over the school holidays.

Over the years I have offered loads of free summer printables but never a simple summer holiday planner, so I decided to put one together. I am a real fan of a family calendar as it helps us all know what we are doing and helps us keep each other informed and it helps me keep track pf the summer months.

This free summer holiday planner (with days of the week) is perfect for putting in any playdates or days out you have and also to plan each day in advance. If you are a teacher then this is a great resource for a pre-Summer holidays lesson activity to send children on their break full of inspiration and free activities. Things they can do over their break including have a BBQ, have a sleepover, visit the local library, ride their bike, have a movie night and go on a picnic. You can also ask for it back in September, completed as their holiday homework.

• It helps with time management for all the family and introduces it to children early.
• It takes the pressure off parents and carers to keep a child occupied all the time
• It reduces stress for children who like routine and need to know what they are doing next and helps prevent overwhelm.

My Favorite Printers

I have to say that I am a massive fan of Epson Eco Tank printers and have been using them exclusively for over 3 years and when Very offered me the ET-8550 ecotank which is an A3 printer I was seriously excited (yes that is the sad life I lead)! The printer is a 3-in-1 WI-FI printer with 10.9cm colour touchscreen. 3-in-1 means that it can print (double-sided), copy and scan to A4 size paper and scan, print and copy on A3 paper. It also has trays for A4 paper, photo paper and a rear feed for A3 paper and thicker cards.

It took 16 minutes to set up and 7 of those were for calibrating the paper settings. Plus you can add an app to your phone and it walks you through exactly what you need to do and how to do it at each and every stage, making this a super simple process to get out of the box and printing.

My favourite aspect of the ecotank printers is the ink comes in bottles that your add to the printer as and when needed, not only is it economical, it is easy and less expensive than other printing options. Even better the same ink can be used in all the ecotank printers if you have more than one.

Swimming

Swimming is a great way to have fun and stay cool on your summer vacation. It’s an activity almost all kids of any age, from toddlers to teenagers, can enjoy. Of course, for your kids to enjoy it safely, make sure they get professional instruction beforehand and wear life jackets when needed. 

As far as equipment, you only need swimsuits, sunscreen, and maybe a few pool floats or toys. Plus, who doesn’t love swimming in a beautiful lake, pool, or ocean? 

Your family will make lasting memories while the kids splash around with the sun on their faces and the wind in their hair.

Kayaking

The exciting experience of kayaking provides the perfect adrenaline rush for your kids’ next vacation! Paddling the warm waters of summer gives a sense of freedom and exploration like no other. 

From wild rivers to the open sea, kayaking offers an amazing outdoor journey that will leave lasting memories. The experts at WaterSportsWhiz recommend taking some lessons to make sure everyone stays safe while having fun!
