5 Tips for choosing a family friendly hotel

1. Location – I always try and pick a hotel that is central to where we are visiting.  Ideally within walking distance of the attractions we are hoping to visit and even better within walking distance of a park or green space!
2. Soundproofing – I always ask what the noise is like in the rooms.  Not just from the corridor traffic, but also so I do not have to worry about the early morning noise that my tribe might make.
3. Food – I am lucky that my boys eat pretty much everything, but it is worth checking that there are at least a few family friendly items on the menu and that they are a reasonable price.
4. Beds and rooms – Now my boys are 10 and 11, I always check that they will be full-size beds or that there is the possibility of connecting rooms.   Also do not be afraid to ask about the possibility of a larger room.   Also check if they have cot beds for younger children.
5. WiFi – Free WiFi is now top of my list of needs when we visit a hotel.  Not just for me when the boys are asleep, but also so they can use the Ipad early on a morning.  Plus if you have teens, then WiFi is definitely a must.

We haven’t had a foreign holiday this year, instead we have been enjoying what the British countryside has to offer.  My boys loved Blackpool last year and have been asking to return pretty much since we left.  This time we stayed mid week rather than the weekend and spent three nights in the resort and packed in so much.  I firmly believe that Blackpool is going through a resurgence.

After staying ten minutes outside of Blackpool at Ribby Hall Holiday Village last year, this year we we stayed at The Big Blue Hotel, which is just outside of The Pleasure Beach and meant that we could park up the car and travel everywhere by the trams, which cost £10 per day for a family ticket. The hotel was a super base for our adventures and the breakfast was amazing setting us up for the day ahead.  We also had dinner on our first night and it was delicious.

The weather this summer hasn’t been the best and I am going to admit that we were worried that we would have a horrible time if it rained, but even though there was a few rain showers they did not dampen our fab time.

I know a lot of people worry that going to somewhere like Blackpool will be expensive, but if you plan in advance then it really isn’t.

We had a resort pass this year to make sure that we got the best value entrance prices on the attractions we visited.  In our three days we didn’t manage to fit in the Dungeon or the Model Village, but if you return within 90 days then you can still use your pass.

When it comes to food, we are a fussy bunch.  We don’t eat out often, so have pretty high standards.  I would rather pay for good food than have a mediocre meal out and the boys are the same.  The trick to finding great food in Blackpool is tips from other people.  Word of mouth goes a long way.

Our meal in The Big Blue Hotel was not inexpensive, but it was delicious and you can find great deals on rooms and meals from the hotel when booking.

At Captain Jacks in Coral Reef kids eat free and the food was great.  The boys had a burger and a hot dog and my chicken kebab was cooked just right as was MadDad’s burger.

We are big fans of Fish and Chips, but living near Whitby we are spoilt with the UK’s best fish shops.  We ate in Harry Ramsden’s and the chips were amazing, plus it is great to get a choice of haddock or cod.

When we visited Blackpool last year we ate in La Fontana and enjoyed it so much we had to go back this year.  The food is delicious and reasonably priced.  Even more so if you arrive before 7pm and get an early bird deal of starter and main for £10.99.  It is a hidden treasure, authentic italian food with great service and the best margarita pizza Mini has ever had.  Maxi is already talking about next years visit!

When it comes to ice cream nothing beats Notarianni’s ices on Waterloo Road.  Just take a look at the sundaes we had.  Their vanilla ice cream is the stuff Mini’s dreams are made of and are a meal in themselves.

Our weekend unplugged

Sherwood Pines is around two and a half hours drive for us and we had a pet friendly cabin booked, so set off after school on Friday night.   Checking in was a breeze as I had filled out the online check in form and we were in our cabin and the boys in the hottub 12 minutes after arriving!

We had made the decision to have a tech free weekend (I still used my phone), but we took board games, books, colouring in and also watched some TV in our downtime. It was really important to me to have quality family time.

On the Friday when we arrived (once we had dragged the boys out of the hot tub) we had a lovely walk around the woodland area. It was almost as though we all exhaled and immediately relaxed when we entered in to the woodland area. We returned to the cabin to find our ice cream, sweets and pop that we had pre ordered, along with our breakfast pack had been delivered and we watched a movie together.

I woke on Saturday morning to MadDad cooking breakfast for everyone and the boys in the hottub again! We then walked to the Forest Retreat for our archery session.  We then popped back to the cabin for lunch before returning for a bush skills session with a Forest Ranger, all with Alvin in tow.  It was wonderful to do activities as a family and all learn together.

We picked up a BBQ pack at the retreat for an evening meal at the cabin.  MadDad cooked whilst me and the boys took advantage of the sunny evening in the hottub!  The meat from the retreat was excellent and really great value.  We ended the evening with a competitive session of sleeping Queens.

Sunday we took a short walk to The Forestry Commission at Sherwood Pines, where Maxi and MadDad did Go Ape and Mini did Go Ape Junior. Me and Alvin spent the time watching and videoing them.  It was so much fun for them all.

The cabins at Sherwood Pines are superbly equipped and even have plastic wine glasses for the hot tub. We actually felt that the cabin was possibly the best cabin we have ever stayed in as a family.  It was so well set out, comfortable and smart, without feeling that we couldn’t relax.  The beds were really comfortable and we all slept really well, but that could have also been down to all the walks we did!

It was the perfect place to have an unplugged weekend and the kids didn’t miss their electronics at all.

Would we recommend it?  Yes we would and our friend Susan K Mann has just come back from Sherwood Pines with her family and they loved it too!
