Bread on a stick, yes bread on a stick that you can cook over a fire or on the BBQ. Damper bread is an Australian food and has been a huge hit here. It is super simple to make and tastes ace.
We are back with our A-Z of Ingredients series and this week we are at O is for Olives. Olives are an aquired taste. I love them as does Mini, but MadDad and Maxi not so much. Both of them loved the damper bread with olives.
Ingredients
- 1 cup self-raising flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 – 1 cup milk
- pinch of salt
- Small amount of chopped olives
This will make two sticks. We make a savory one with olives and also a plain one to spread with Nutella or jam.
Rub the butter through the flour until it is all crumbly. When the boys were smaller we called it tickling the flour and butter.
Mix the salt, sugar and a little milk at a time until it forms a dough.
Add your chopped olives.
Divide into two pieces and roll into a snake shape. Wind around a clean, dry stick or a skewer.
Hold over the campfire to cook.
Then try and prevent the big man of the house from eating it all!

Thanks to Tesco and their Flame Academy for getting us hooked on letting the kids cook on the BBQ.
I can’t bear olives but I bet this would be lovely for us with a bit of chilli in the bread instead x x
oohhhh love the look of these! Will be trying the recipe x
We will give this recipe a try! My family loves cooking out on the grill.
What great thing to make for the bbq. We lived in Australia for a year when I was 7 and one of the parts of school I remember best was an overnight trip to stay at a camp and seeing Aboriginal people give demonstrations of some of their traditional skills. The one I remember best was fire lighting by rubbing sticks together, such skill. We also had a huge campfire and cooked and ate damper…..I remember it as being just flour and water but your version probably tastes better! Juliex
Oh this does look like great fun for the kids to make 🙂
