Remembrance Sunday is an important moment to pause, reflect, and honour those who gave their lives in service. A simple way to help children understand the meaning of the poppy is through crafting. This poppy pin craft tutorial for kids uses felt and basic supplies to create a wearable poppy pin – perfect for schools, clubs, or at home.

Why the Poppy?
The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance, inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields. Each November, people across the UK wear poppies to show respect and gratitude to the Armed Forces community. Making poppies with children provides an opportunity to talk about its history and meaning in a gentle, hands-on way.
Materials You’ll Need
- Red felt
- Black felt or black button
- Green felt (for leaves)
- Safety pins (or brooch backs)
- Fabric glue or needle and thread
- Scissors
- Pencil or chalk for tracing
- Optional: Printable poppy petal template (download at the end of this post!)
Step-by-Step Felt Poppy Tutorial

1. Cut the Poppy
Trace the popp head shape onto red felt using the printable template or freehand. Cut them out carefully – younger children may need help with this step.
2. Make the Centre
Cut a small black circle of felt to sit in the middle of the poppy. This represents the poppy’s seed head. We used a black button instead.

3. Add a Leaf
Cut a simple leaf shape from green felt. This will sit behind the petals and give the pin a more realistic look.

4. Assemble the Layers
Arrange the petals. Place the black felt circle in the middle, and tuck the green leaf behind.
- Glue method: Use fabric glue to secure all the layers. Allow to dry before moving on.
- Sewing method: Stitch the layers together with a few neat stitches in the centre.

5. Attach the Pin
Flip the poppy over. Glue or sew a safety pin or brooch back to the reverse side so the poppy can be worn.

Educational Value
As children craft their poppies, take time to explain why people wear them. You might share age-appropriate stories, poems, or talk about peace and gratitude. Crafting helps kids connect emotionally while giving them a keepsake they can wear with pride on Remembrance Sunday.
