Why is the Nutcracker associated with Christmas?
The Nutcracker is considered Christmassy largely due to its association with the famous ballet, “The Nutcracker,” composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The ballet, which premiered in 1892, is set on Christmas Eve and follows the magical journey of a young girl named Clara, who receives a Nutcracker doll as a gift. The Nutcracker comes to life, leading Clara through a fantastical adventure filled with holiday-themed characters and scenes, such as the sugar plum fairy, mouse king and the Land of Sweets. Over the years, the ballet has become a beloved Christmas tradition, with its performances and imagery deeply embedded in holiday celebrations around the world. The Nutcracker figure itself, often depicted as a toy soldier, has since become a popular Christmas decoration, symbolizing the magic and joy of the holiday season.

always print my printables directly onto 160 gsm cardstock using my Epson Ecotank Printer rather than regular paper, this way they are a little more durable and the pens do not bleed through to the other side. However, if you do not have a home printer then just pop to a library and use theirs. I am also a big fan of Colour Me Kids Skin Coloured Pencils as they are brilliant for adding different skin tones.

🛠️ How to Assemble Your Nutcracker Puppet
1. Print the Template
- Start by printing your chosen Nutcracker template on sturdy cardstock or thick paper for durability.
2. (For Coloring Version) Personalize Your Nutcracker
- If you selected the coloring version, now’s your chance to get creative! Use your favorite colors to bring your Nutcracker to life.

3. Cut Out the Pieces
- Carefully cut out each piece of the Nutcracker, including the head, body, arms, legs, and accessories. If you want to increase the longevity of your Nutcracker Prince puppet now is the time to laminate it.
4. Punch Holes for Joints
- Use a hole puncher or needle to create small holes at the marked spots where the joints will connect.
5. Assemble the Puppet
- Align the holes of the connecting pieces and secure them with brads/split pins. This will allow your Nutcracker’s limbs to move just like a real toy soldier.
- Attach the arms to the body.
- Connect the legs to the torso.
- Add the head for the final touch.
6. Make the Puppet Movable

- Make sure the arms are in the “down position” and that the thread runs straight across before knotting the other end.
- Repeat for the legs.
- Add a connecting piece of string between the arms and the legs – this mustn’t be too tight (the arms won’t move) or too loose (the legs won’t move). PS – this is our monkey puppet!
7. Add Decorative Elements (Optional)
- For a more festive look, consider adding glitter to the Nutcracker’s uniform, sequins for buttons, or even a small ribbon for a bow.
8. Enjoy Your Articulated Nutcracker Puppet!
- Your Nutcracker is ready to march into your holiday celebrations! Use it as a decoration, for play, or as part of your Christmas storytelling.
