With the festive season around the corner, crafting is a fun way to engage both kids and adults. One delightful activity to try is making an articulated snowman puppet using a simple template. These puppets add movement to your holiday decorations and are perfect for entertaining kids during winter break. You can download two versions: one to color in and personalize, and another that’s already pre-colored for quick assembly. This snowman is so cute with his carrot nose!

What You’ll Need:
- • Printable template: Download the free snowman puppet template (one to color in and one pre-colored).
- • Scissors: To carefully cut around the snowman’s parts.
- • Split pins (brads): These will be used to attach the limbs and head, making the puppet movable.
- • Thread to articulate the puppet and make it movable.
- • Coloring materials: If you’re using the color-in version, grab some markers, crayons, or colored pencils to make your snowman unique.

I always print my printables directly onto 160 gsm cardstock using my Epson Ecotank Printer rather than regular paper, this way they are a little more durable and the pens do not bleed through to the other side. However, if you do not have a home printer then just pop to a library and use theirs. To extend the life and suitability of paper puppets I like to laminate them, but if you don’t need a laminator self adhesive laminating sheets are amazing.

Steps to Make Your Snowman Puppet:
1. Print the template: Download and print either the pre-colored version or the one designed for coloring.
2. Color (if needed): If you’re using the color-in version, let your creativity shine by coloring the snowman in festive colors. You could even glue on buttons and add glitter or sequins.

3. Cut out the pieces: Carefully cut along the lines of the snowman’s head, arms, scarf, and body. Now is the time to laminate your pieces for durability. Make sure to cut out the holes for the split pins too.
4. Assemble the puppet: Use split pins to connect the parts together. Attach the arms, head, and any other movable elements. The puppet will now have articulated parts that can move!
5. Make the Puppet Movable
- Make sure the arms are in the “down position” and that the thread runs straight across before knotting the other end.
- Repeat for the legs.
- Add a connecting piece of string between the arms and the legs – this mustn’t be too tight (the arms won’t move) or too loose (the legs won’t move). PS – this is our monkey puppet!

5. Decorate or Play: Hang the snowman on your Christmas tree, use it as a festive decoration, or simply let your children have fun playing with their new snowman friend.

Why Articulated Puppets?
Articulated puppets like this snowman add an extra layer of fun because they can move! This snowman’s arms and head can be positioned differently, giving children a sense of accomplishment once they see their creation come to life. The process of making these puppets also enhances fine motor skills, creativity, and holiday spirit!
