How To Do String Pull Art – A beautiful process art project

String pull art is a popular technique using string or yarn to create beautiful abstract art paintings. This tutorial will guide you through the steps to make a unique piece of pull string art. It is perfect for kids of all ages.

String Art Painting

I love how these simple abstract string art paintings turned out. I don’t know about you, but I think they look a lot like colourful calla lilies. They really are stunning and so easy to make. We first saw a variation of this on Babble Dabble Do, where they used one colour of paint per string, so we were interested to see if we could make it with one string and lots of colours!

I know that I seem to go on about process art, but it is really important for everyone no matter their age. Fun art projects like this are great for all ages, I can even see teens, tweens and seniors being delighted with how this works and the act of making.

Gather all the supplies you need. You don’t want to start and have to get more, as it can be messy.

Fold your paper in half, then cut it along the crease. If you are looking to experiment try using different weights of paper and different kinds of string. Have a play and see how it makes different effects. This project is all about the creative process.

Add an inch or so of each acrylic paint color on a paper plate.

Cut a 12-18 inches (30 to 40 cm) piece of string.

Place the string into the paint. Press it down and coat the string with the toothpick (or craft stick/popsicle stick).

Carefully pull the sting out of the paint, and lay it onto one half of the paper. Make sure to have one area where the string overlaps and loops. Leave the end of the string without the paint at the bottom edge of the paper. Place the other piece of paper onto the painted string and press down gently.

Place the tissue box (Or a book) on top, and add some mild pressure on top of the tissue box while you slowly pull the string out.

Remove the tissue box. Slowly separate the two pieces of paper or card.

You will have a mirror image on the other piece of paper. Allow to air dry.
