Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt with Free Printable Template

This nature photo scavenger hunt post is a paid collaboration with Very. I love getting outside in nature with children, however, sometimes when I suggest a hike, I am met with the words “Walks are boring”. The best way I have found to get them outdoors and enjoy a walk is to make it a challenge and a scavenger hunt always gets them interested and excited.

I have fond memories of instant cameras from when I was younger, however, instant cameras have come a long way since I was then. We opted for the Instax Mini LiPlay Hybrid Instant Camera because it is an instant camera with an LED screen and a printer that connects with smart phones, which my teens love. It really is magical to watch the image develop in front of you.

It works so well for a photo scavenger hunt as it means not every child needs a camera, especially as most already have a smartphone or tablet so can use that to take photos of each item and then they can all be printed with the camera or the kids can take turns with the camera. Instead of fighting to get kids off their devices, you are demonstrating an active way to use them.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

This really is a fun way to get out and about and a fab way for children to get interested in photography and the natural world. I love to see their perspective on the items on the list. I have two options, once for younger children and preschoolers with pictures and text and for older children with just the text. The idea is that they take a picture of each item and glue it onto the free printable and they end up with a photo book as a memory of their photo challenge.

It is a way for children to learn how to take notice of their surroundings by promoting active engagement. Younger kids around kindergarten age are more likely to look for things that are an exact match to the clues, however, you can offer a special prize or bonus points for interpretation with older kids. I always like to include reflection for this reason. I am often astounded by children’s natural photography skills.

Scavenger hunts like this as perfect outdoor fun at birthday parties or as a class, or group activity.
