We LOVE making pom poms. They are great for working on fine motor skills and for using up bits of yarn. We are not so keen on spiders in real life, but what do you get when you cross pom poms, pipe cleaners and spiders? A not so scary pom pom spider of course!
How to make your own not so scary pom pom spider
Materials
- 4 pipe cleaners
- Yarn
- Pom pom maker
- Googly eyes
Instructions
We wanted to make our spider in autumnal colors and the boys picked out brown, green, white and orange.
We used our trusty pom pom maker (UK Link/US Link) and as we wanted a variegated pom pom, we wound the yarn as a four strand. But you can really use your imagination here and you could even have a pink spider!
These pom pom makers are so simple to use, they really are child’s play. Just take a look at Maxi demonstrating it.
When you are tying off the pom pom leave a long length of yarn if you want to hang it.
We used variegated multi coloured pipe cleaners for the legs and cut them in half to make them proportionate. This really depends on the size of pom pom you make.
It is really important that you or your child pushes the pipe cleaner legs through the pom pom very gently , so as not to push out all the yarn threads. We found it easier to push one leg at a time.
Now is the time to egg your googly eyes. Ours had self adhesive backs, but a spot of glue can help or a glue dot (UK Link/US Link). My boys decided that our not so scary pom pom spiders had to have four eyes (yes they can be picky)!
I hope that you are not scared of our pom pom spiders.
Oh hes very cute jen (I am going to check out that pom pom maker our is rubbish! )

That pom pom maker is just a brilliant idea. So much more straight forward than trying to cut two perfect cardboard rings when you are in a rush! Love the spider, very cute! (:
