Who is St Nicholas? (Simple Explanation for Kids)
St Nicholas was a real person who lived a long time ago in the 3rd century. He was a kind bishop known for helping the poor, caring for children, and giving secretly to those in need. Due to his kindness and generosity, stories about him spread across Europe.
Over many years, St Nicholas became the inspiration for Santa Claus!
He is often shown wearing:
- A bishop’s hat (called a mitre)
- A cloak
- Holding a staff or crozier
- And sometimes carrying a bag of gifts or sweets

When is St Nicholas Day?
St Nicholas Day is celebrated on the 6th of December every year. Many families celebrate the evening before, on the 5th December, by leaving shoes or boots out for St Nicholas to fill.
How is St Nicholas Day Celebrated?
Traditions vary by country, but here are some of the most common ways children celebrate:
| Country | Tradition |
|---|---|
| Germany | Children clean their shoes and leave them by the door or fireplace on the evening of 5th December. St Nicholas fills them with sweets, nuts, oranges, chocolate coins or small gifts. |
| The Netherlands (Sinterklaas) | Sinterklaas arrives on a boat from Spain in mid-November and leaves gifts on the night of 5th December, known as Sinterklaasavond or Pakjesavond. |
| Belgium | Children leave out a shoe, a drawing, and sometimes carrots for Sinterklaas’ horse. |
| Austria & Switzerland | Children may meet St Nicholas in person, and he often gives small treats and encourages kind behaviour. |
The focus is always on:
- Kindness
- Generosity
- Helping others
- Giving more than receiving
Which is such a lovely message for children to learn at this time of year.

I always print my printables directly onto 160 gsm cardstock using my Epson Ecotank Printer rather than regular paper, this way they are a little more durable and the pens do not bleed through to the other side. However, if you do not have a home printer then just pop to a library and use theirs.
