For the last 10 years, my garden has been a football pitch, sandpit and vegetable garden. Now that my boys’ are older the garden is back to being a more adult domain, so I have been researching the top garden trends for 2019. One of the biggest things I have noticed is that garden trends seem to stick around. it is not about moving on from one trend to the nest and sustainability is a BIG thing.
Top Garden Trends 2019
Turn your garden into a room
After the wonderful summer of 2018 staycations are becoming more and more popular. Why travel when you can stay at home and make the most of your own garden. Outdoor furniture is becoming more affordable allowing you to create exterior spaces with areas to dine, entertain, relax and be active. Adding a Fire pit, outdoor lighting, outdoor speakers, outdoor rug and storage blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor.
We are in the process of creating a teenage garden hangout that works for our boys’.
Grow your own
Although grow your own isn’t a new trend, now more than ever we have a vested interested in where our food comes from and how it’s being grown. And the ability to grow your own food is not limited to people large gardens or allotments.
With small gardens becoming the new norm, it’s no surprise that ‘patio fruits’ are set to become the next big thing: think apples, apricots, blueberries and cherries. Also Easy to grow vegetables, salads and herbs can be grown in wall planters, patio containers or even hanging baskets.
The garden is one of the places that has really seen the rise of eco and plastic free living. 2019 will see a big switch to biodegradable plant pots, using materials such as coconut husks, wood chips, rice husks, miscanthus or seaweed.
Where we are using plastic there will be a focus on quality pieces that will last and can be passed on. The garden will also be a place to re-use household plastic products which you would otherwise chuck away. Plastic water bottles can make a statement wind mobile or even a planter.
Nature is coming to the fore in 2019 which will be helped by a loser and wilder style of planting and also adding pollinating specific flowers.
We will be also adding specific nature-friendly additions such as bug hotels and bird feeders. Hedgehog highways are going to be one of the biggest things in 2019 and hopefully will make a big difference to our native hogs.
