<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The perimenopause and menopause are important stages in a woman’s life. These processes usually affect women aged 45 to 55, who often have various symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and insomnia. I went through a medical menopause aged 35, and hot flashes and night sweats were one of the main things that disturbed my sleep.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the body adapts to a new normal, you may experience discomfort and unfamiliarity, which can in turn affect your quality of sleep. Whilst this is common, it can be far from pleasant, which is why we have compiled our 5 top tips on how to get to sleep when going through the menopause. Sometimes just knowing that other women are going through similar things can be really helpful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As your body adjusts to its lack of hormones, it can impact your sleep quality and cause sleep disorders. These sleep disruptions can start in perimenopause and continue throughout your menopause transition.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sleep difficulties can include many things, from restless leg syndrome, hot flashes, night sweats, difficulty getting to sleep, poor sleep quality, including a change in your circadian rhythm and sleep schedules. Lack of good quality sleep can affect your whole waking life too and if you are struggling with long-term insomnia, then do talk to your GP about additional medical solutions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Establishing a calming routine before bed can signal to your body that it&#8217;s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Consider incorporating activities such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practising relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or gentle stretching. These activities can help relax your mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Keep Your Bedroom Cool </h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hot flashes or flushes and night sweats can make it difficult to maintain a comfortable body temperature while sleeping. To combat this, try keeping your bedroom cool with a fan, opening windows, and using lightweight, natural fibre bedding. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Engaging in regular physical activity can have numerous benefits for sleep during menopause. Exercise helps reduce stress, improve mood, and promote better sleep quality. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week. However, try to avoid exercising too close to bedtime, as it can increase alertness and make it harder to fall asleep.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Seek Support and Talk to Your Doctor</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Menopause can be a challenging time, both physically and emotionally. Additionally, if your sleep disturbances persist or significantly impact your day-to-day life, consider talking to your doctor. They can provide guidance, recommend lifestyle changes, or discuss potential treatment options (including HRT) to help improve your sleep during menopause.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding Cat Allergies in Kids</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Allergies in kiddos are just like those in adults. Simply put, an <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/allergies/symptoms-causes/syc-20351497">allergy</a> is the immune system’s reaction to a foreign substance it deems harmful. Oftentimes, that foreign substance, called an allergen, is perfectly harmless. It could be pollen floating on the breeze or northern pasture grasses like timothy. Generally, these substances are harmless, but to some immune systems, they’re big red flags.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When your child has an allergy and they’re exposed to the allergen, their little immune system will jump into action. Your child’s body produces antibodies, blood proteins that counteract a specific antigen. Those antibodies are responsible for producing the symptoms you recognize as an allergic reaction.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These <a href="https://acaai.org/allergies/allergies-101/who-gets-allergies/children/">symptoms</a> can vary in severity but may include:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Skin rashes</li>



<li>Hives</li>



<li>Sneezing</li>



<li>Coughing</li>



<li>Runny nose</li>



<li>Itchy eyes</li>



<li>Difficulty breathing</li>



<li>Stomach upset</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Culprit Causing Cat Allergies</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s a common misconception surrounding cat allergies: the allergy is caused by the animal’s fur. While some people are sensitive to cat fur, the actual culprit is often the cat’s dander. The dander is the skin cells the cat sloughs off naturally.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dead skin cells can become airborne, hanging in the air and causing unpleasant symptoms. They can also cling to surfaces like furniture, bedding, and clothes, causing the symptoms to flare up long after the cat has left the room.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If dander isn’t the culprit, it could be the cat’s saliva. Like dander, feline saliva can become airborne when dry and often clings to various surfaces, including carpets, furniture, bedding, and clothing.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Are Cat Allergy Shots?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://getcurex.com/blog-posts/immunotherapy-cat-allergies">Cat allergy shots</a> are a type of <a href="https://acaai.org/allergies/management-treatment/allergy-immunotherapy/">allergy immunotherapy</a> (AIT). Like other types of AIT, cat allergy shots are designed to desensitize the body to a particular allergen.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over time, cat allergy shots for humans can build an allergen-specific tolerance. To achieve this result, the shot delivers a small, incrementally increasing dose of the allergen (dander, saliva, etc.). The dose, delivered periodically under the skin, exposes the immune system to the allergen.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This repeated exposure can, over time, help reduce the production of the “blocking” antibodies that your child’s body produces (which kickstart the reaction). So, with consistency, your child may slowly become less sensitive to that particular allergen.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Do Cat Allergy Shots Actually Work?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We hear you—it does sound too good to be true. After all, how can a series of shots relieve an allergy? While it takes time, cat allergy shots are highly effective, even for kiddos.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Countless studies and trials have showcased the remarkable efficacy of these treatments. For example, a range of <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41577-022-00786-1">research and clinical trials</a> demonstrated how effective these treatments can be. They found that repeated subcutaneous injections (allergy shots) can achieve an allergen-specific tolerance that persists even after treatment is discontinued.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or, consider<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6132438/"> this study</a>, which sought to determine the long-term impact of allergy immunotherapy on allergic rhinitis. It evaluated various pieces of evidence and found that both types of AIT (allergy shots and allergy drops) are highly effective in treating allergic rhinitis. These treatments even offer clinical benefits and immunological changes indicating allergen-specific tolerance.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cat allergy shots can be highly effective; there’s no doubt about that. Of course, every child is different, so the timeline for seeing results can vary.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Long Do Cat Allergy Shots Take to Work?</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike antihistamines or decongestants, which usually work quickly, cat allergy shots need time to work. Your kiddo’s body needs time to adjust. It usually takes anywhere from two to three years to see the best results from cat allergy shots. However, you might start to notice improvements within the first year!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It all depends on how your child’s body handles the treatment. It’s not a quick fix, though, so if you want overnight results, this avenue might not be your best bet.&nbsp;</p>

		<title>Living with Seasonal Affective Disorder</title>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have suffered from depression, insomnia and anxiety for as long as I can remember. I was termed a “nervous child” when I was younger. However, I wasn’t medicated for my depression until my early 20’s when my dad died unexpectedly in an industrial accident.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the years I have had some very dark times and suffered from post-natal depression after my pregnancies and was incredibly lucky to get fantastic treatment from the mental health team including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and access to a psychiatrist.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This gave me an insight into what compounds my moods and also some of the triggers for the changes. For me, sleep is a big issue (or that should be lack of sleep) and I also suffer from seasonal affective disorder where my mood changes dramatically in the darker seasons.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Knowing this &#8211; allows me to make allowances but also take active action against it and proactively help my mental health</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What I do to try and alleviate my SAD.</h2>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Sleep &#8211; In addition to being prone to depression, I have always suffered from <a href="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/how-to-get-a-good-nights-sleep/" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/how-to-get-a-good-nights-sleep/">insomnia</a> &#8211; heck, it is a family tradition to talk about the fact that my parents got less than 4 hours of sleep until I turned six and then they only got more as I started to get my own breakfast! So I prioritise sleep over everything else.  We have as large bed a bed as will fit in our bedroom, yes a super <a href="https://simbasleep.com/collections/king-size-mattresses" data-type="link" data-id="https://simbasleep.com/collections/king-size-mattresses">king mattress </a>as there is no need for my restless sleep to interfere with the husbeasts sleep! </li>



<li>I have a daylight alarm clock &#8211; it wakes me up with a dawn simulation and fills my room with a glow. I try and get up at the same time every day as consistency and routine work for me. My husband is great and brings me up a thermos of tea as he leaves for work before I get up.</li>



<li>I make sure that I try and get as much natural light into my home as possible, so open all the curtains as soon as I get up.</li>



<li>I use a SAD lamp &#8211; I have a 1000 lumens plus lamp that I use for 15-30 minutes each day from September onwards. I have mine at my desk and set to come on at the same time each day.</li>



<li>I walk our Dog Alvin at lunchtime each day &#8211; he is a great incentive for getting out into nature no matter what the weather.</li>



<li>Food, I crave cabs during this time and I try to make sure that I balance that with eating a rainbow. I don’t restrict the carbs as I find that just makes me want to eat them more, but I make sure that I have lots of my favourite fruits and vegetables with them. I think this is much easier as I have a family and I meal plan each week. They keep me in check! I also make sure that I take my Vitamin D spray each day.</li>



<li>I don’t drink alcohol on a regular basis, but I do make sure that I switch to decaf at a certain time each day when it comes to my tea or coffee. I try and embrace the cosy and have hot chocolates and make sure I keep hydrated. Some people find that they use alcohol as a crutch this time of year, so choose to avoid it as it exacerbates my unwanted feelings.</li>



<li>My family know that I suffer more from September to April and make allowances for that, but they also encourage me to get out and about. Go for more walks. My instinct is to hunker down, but I feel much better the more fresh air and outside time I get. Naturally, I want to socially withdraw, but this adds to my negative feelings so I plan to see friends more often as a way of making me feel better. Having things to look forward to really helps.</li>



<li>Hygge &#8211; I try to take a page out of our Scandinavian cousin’s books (they have even less winter sunshine than we do) and embrace all things cosy, including lighting candles and our fire, getting my quilts out and gathering with the family when I can. I even light candles, grab a hot water bottle and blanket and snuggle and read on a evening as soon as the darkness draws in (I get the fairy lights out in October)! Apparently staying warm can reduce depression by half.</li>
</ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mindset can help</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Knowing that it is coming can be daunting, but also I know that I can plan for feeling this way. For me, mindset is really important. Knowing that this will pass and that the sun will come back.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I make sure that I celebrate the small things or glimmers that have made me happy each week. Keeping a regular journal can help me find a pattern so I can do more of what makes me happy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Seek Help</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is important not to suffer in silence and I know that I can always chat with my GP and look at upping my anti-depressants during this time if needed.</p>

As always this is my opinion and I have not been swayed in any way.  Sleep is always a constant topic of conversation, especially when you are not getting enough! I have been since having children,  theirs, mine, co-sleeping, size of beds, the lack of it, how to get more and the quality of it.  Add to this the perimenopause and the menopause and woah I am officially obsessed.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I experienced a medical menopause in my 30&#8217;s and found the symptoms so distressing that I went on HRT for 15 years, however, due to health risks I had to come off them and all those symptoms returned with a vengeance the worst ones being night sweats.  I would get so hot and sweat so much that I would wake up soaking wet and shivering.  I tried all my <a href="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/5-tips-to-get-to-sleep-when-going-through-the-menopause/">menopause sleeping tips</a>.  We had a memory foam mattress which we loved, but I felt like I was cooking on it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So we got the <a href="https://originmattress.co.uk/origin-hybrid-pro-mattress/">Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress</a> which I think is the best mattress for us gals suffering from hot flashes and night sweats.  I have put it through its paces including when I caught Covid and my temperature was over 40! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to the top layer being made from Tencel (which is a sustainable wood pulp which feels cool to the touch), I don&#8217;t feel it heating up under me at all.  Plus the plush soft top is a hand-stitched sleep surface so you get a feeling of luxury.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, when those dreaded night sweats and hot flashes do happen the bamboo-infused wool layer actively works to keep me dry and comfortable throughout the night by absorbing and releasing any moisture elsewhere, by wicking away this moisture I don&#8217;t wake up in a cold sweat. I can not express just how much better my sleep has been since switching. The menopause took away my ability to regulate my body temperature but I feel more in control as I don&#8217;t have to keep a spare night by the bed or even a towel. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We thought at one point we were going to have to have two different mattresses on the bed, one for me and one for my partner, however,  just because the Origin gives hot sleepers cooling comfort doesn&#8217;t mean that it doesn&#8217;t work well for my husband.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am a larger lady and have restless legs (thanks to the menopause and lack of blooming hormones), however, due to pocketed coils,  Aerospace-grade titanium springs plus edge support my movements don&#8217;t give him any sleep disruption at all.  In fact, the hexagrid foam means it works for me as a side sleeper and him as a back sleeper.  He also commented that we seem to be having a lot more warmer night temperatures so he is delighted with the cooling aspect of the mattress.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Menopause symptoms can have a big effect on all parts of our life and for me, lack of sleep just exacerbates them and the anxiety I experienced knowing that I was going to have sleep disruptions caused by night sweats and hot flushes was debilitating in itself. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">We used to joke about sleep all the time, mainly because we had one child who did sleep and one who was a <a href="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/when-your-child-just-doesnt-want-to-go-to-sleep-an-update/">very reluctant sleeper</a>. I also think part of my obsession with sleep was my lack of it as I have always been an insomniac and that only got worse <a href="https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/insomnia-cures-for-mums/">when I became a parent</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During lockdown, Mini went from not sleeping to sleeping for over 16 hours a day. We were so concerned that we saw the GP and he had blood tests. It turns out that he was just unengaged with online learning and his sleep patterns got out of whack. So I want to share with you just how much sleep teenagers need and how to help them get that sleep.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How much sleep does a Teenager Need? </h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Experts recommend that children between 13 and 19 years of age need to get 8 to 10 hours of sleep and have a consistent sleep schedule. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As adults, we know that sleep is important for many reasons, but for teenagers, it is especially important as they are still growing and developing. Sleep is so important for their mental health, that sleep deprivation can cause mood changes, anxiety and depression. and sleep-deprived teens are more likely to be involved in car crashes and other accidents because sleepiness affects reaction times. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ways to help your Teenager get the sleep they need</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fact is that teenagers develop a delayed sleep cycle, but what does that mean, well basically they become night owls as they don&#8217;t get sleepy until later perhaps at around 11 pm or midnight and if left to their own devices would sleep later in the morning, but what with early school start times (heck, my boys had to be on the school bus at 7.05 am) they struggle to get enough sleep through no fault of their own.  So what can you do to help?</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Involve your teenager </h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know this sounds like passing the buck, but it isn&#8217;t.  You are empowering them to take control.  Discuss if you can help ease their schedule or change things to make it easier on them. Help them set a sleep schedule so they know when they need to get to sleep in order to get the optimum amount of sleep. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We found that grass roots football games starting later in the day for teenagers not only meant they got more sleep but they played better too.  Also, regular exercise helped my teenagers sleep.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Think about their bed and environment </h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My teenagers are like hulking gangly men physically now and their beds, well let&#8217;s just say that changing Maxi&#8217;s  (who is 19) bed to a small double has made a massive difference in the quality and length of his sleep. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">And whilst we are talking about their environment and bedroom keeping it cool, quiet and dark is so important to sleep hygiene, especially as loads of young adults and teenagers will have LED lights and screens in their rooms. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Encourage them to have good Sleep Habits</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As much as you might want to confiscate their phone and screens or even turn off the wifi to get them to sleep, we have to give our adolescents the power to regulate themselves and encourage them to have good sleep hygiene and a regular bedtime routine.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Encourage them to turn off screens 30 minutes before bed and to put their devices on silent or do not disturb mode during the night so as not to distract them from sleep.  No caffeine for 2 hours before bed and also let them know that alcohol inhibits sleep and although they might fall asleep faster they will sleep less. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Seek Outside Help</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If excessive daytime sleepiness and lack of sleep is becoming an issue then do seek help from your doctor.</p>
