When children interact with live, breathing chickens, they can gain an appreciation for these wonderful animals. 

That being said, this sense of respect and appreciation won’t be attained with mere exposure to the chickens. Parents and teachers will have to facilitate the right learning modes to set the children up for success in terms of gaining knowledge about chickens and related life skills.

If you want to make chicken-keeping more engaging for your kids, utilising educational games can be a great way to educate your kids and get the knowledge to stick in their heads. With games, kids will be more likely to pay attention to the chickens and develop this sense of respect. 

So without further ado, here are some fun and useful educational games involving chickens that you can try at home or in the classroom. Let’s jump right into it!

Egg Collection Game

One game you can consider for little kids is a simple game of egg collection. This game involves finding eggs in the yard or coop and keeping track of them through a notebook, whiteboard, or some other tracking device.

All hens lay eggs under the right conditions. Some breeds lay more than others, especially if they’re being housed in quality coops bought from reputable stores like Somerzby. The colour and characteristics of the egg tend to differ slightly from breed to breed, and this is something you can educate your child on as well. 

If you own a chicken at home, then your kid can get started with this fun little game, no matter they’re age. And if you own multiple chicken breeds, you can consider spiking the difficulty by getting your kid to sort and count the eggs laid by different chicken breeds. 

This can be a fun way for kids to learn how to do basic arithmetic, as it has both practical value and a playful, treasure-hunt element that keeps them engaged. By getting children to collect eggs, you can turn something routine into a productive learning moment where they can simultaneously sharpen their basic math skills.

Chicken Observation Bingo

A fun and competitive way to learn about chicken behaviour and have fun while doing so is making a chicken observation bingo card. The premise is simple: players have to watch the flock and note any behaviour that appears on their bingo sheet.

To create a bingo sheet, simply put in behaviours that you think your flock would do. For instance, you can add a square for one particular hen of yours, say her name is Daisy, and have your child watch for “Daisy scratching the ground” or “Daisy sitting in the nesting box.” 

Just like regular bingo, if the action is observed, then mark it as such.

You can mix in general actions too, like one of the members of the flock dust-bathing, a rooster crowing, or a hen finding a bug. The difficulty level is up to you. Once a line has been created, the player can claim “Bingo” and be declared the winner for that round.

In any case, playing this game can be a great way to get your kid to observe the flock’s behaviour actively. This familiarity can make them more attuned to the animal and their needs. It can also spark their curiosity about the animal and make them want to learn more about these creatures.

Chicken Anatomy Match Game

Another fun way to improve your kid’s familiarity with chickens is by letting them play a matching game. 

You can make this deck of cards at home. Simply make two decks: one with the names of the different chicken parts, and another deck with drawings of these parts. Scramble them up and turn them face down. Then, have your kid match the right pair with one another.

For example, if they have flipped the word chicken beak, let them try to find the corresponding picture of said chicken beak. Then, once they’ve successfully matched a picture and a word, remove it from the play area. You can also use this time to describe what this specific chicken body part does and how the chicken uses it—alongside other fun facts.

By constructing this match game, you can get your child to test their cognitive memory and learn more about the different body parts of the chicken in the process. This can be fun, interactive, and educational all in one. 

And if you intend to let your kid tend the chicken when they’re older, this game can be a great way to introduce the anatomy of the chicken to them steadily and patiently.

Another fun way to get your kids to become better chicken handlers is to make them play a build-a-coop design competition with one another. 

This activity, in essence, hones your kid’s craftiness, as it encourages them to sketch or build what they think an ideal chicken coop should look like. They can use paper and crayons, craft sticks, cardboard, and other craft items to create the design that they envision.

You can play a role in the process as well and give out tips on what coops should fundamentally include. 

For instance, you can instruct the child to craft nesting boxes, chicken runs, or ventilation systems as part of the design challenge. You can also use this as an opportunity to teach them the purpose of these coop components so that they’ll know how it differs from other traditional structures.

By walking them through the basics, you can harness their creativity while helping them know the practical aspects of the coop. This, in turn, can make it easier for them to absorb real-world knowledge once it’s their turn to do chores involving chicken rearing and coop cleaning.

Chicken Cook-Off

Of course, not everyone’s going to have a live chicken at home. If you make up this statistic, don’t fret, you can still instil some chicken-related fun by hosting a cooking competition with your kids. 

Have yourself partner up with one of your kids and test your skills in the kitchen using chicken as a primary ingredient. This game doesn’t involve live chickens, so if you don’t have one of those around, this is a great way to prepare a fun yet practical way to create a delicious chicken dish.

There are infinite possibilities when it comes to preparing and cooking a chicken dish. You could go the classic route and make a good fried chicken dish. Or you can create something more master-class, like an exotic chicken recipe involving spices and unique cooking methods. 

By the end of the cook-off, you can taste your culinary creations as a family and declare a winner. 

This activity is not only a great bonding moment for the entire family, but it can also hone your child’s culinary skills. It is also a great way to get your kid familiar with the parts of the chicken and how to cook these parts, which can be a practical benefit as they grow older and more independent.

Woah, all I can say is that maths has changed since I was at school, with new ways of working things out and also new tools to help children. I had never heard of number bonds. So to make life easier I have gathered together some games, posts and aids that might help. I have discovered that often when children are playing they have no idea they are learning.

These are not online tools – when we have schools and teachers offering online learning I think our children need some physical games and toys to help! These are aimed at helping parents support our children and encourage them to play in the house when they are not receiving schooling via their teacher.

I am not going to lie phonics were not something I learned at school, but were transformation for my children’s learning. Often just supplying children with simple letters and cards helps and reading with your child is the most important thing you can do. My boys used to love playing scrabble or eben using the tiles to spell out, it is a fab learning game.

These paper plate clocks have so many uses, from helping children to tell the time, to uses to let them know when an activity will start and end.

Before you can even start working with a paper clock, your children must understand three essential skills:

• They must be able to count from one to sixty.
• They must be able to count by fives.
• They need to know the difference between morning, noon, and night.

What you need:

• Paper Plates
• Split Pins which are sometimes called Paper Fasteners
• Pen’s or crayons
• Card
• Paper numbers stickers (for younger children)
• Scissors

How to make a clock out of a paper plate

1. Cut out the hands from contrasting card, making one longer than the other for the minute hand.
2. Place the numbers round the clock, this is easier if you to the 12, 3, 6 and 9 first.
3. Make a small whole in the center of the plate for the hands and use the split pin to secure

Variations – You can use two paper plates like we did to make lift up flats and put the minutes underneath.  Alternatively you can add them to the outer rim of the paper plate and colour the minutes past one colour and the minutes too another colour.

If you don’t have any paper plates then you could use our paper plate clock template printable and stick to some cardboard. The real secret is the moveable hands and for that you need split pins.

One of the ways we do this is by playing games.  I recently picked up a great little bingo set at the charity shop, which both the boys love top play.  They use it for making up their own number games.  They add the numbers, add up the lines when they score to work out who is the winner and just generally have fun with the numbers and the counters.  When I was growing up I loved bingo too, I used to tag along with my cousins when they visited and go to the arcades to play bingo.

There are lots of other number games you can play with children including:

• Domino’s – great for number recognition, counting and strategy
• Cards – you can play lots of card games with children, from basic snap, which is great for number recognition to something more difficult such as two’s and eights.  Cards are so portable and are great to have in your handbag.
• Dice – a pair of dice is great to carry in your bag.  You can use them for very basic sums by getting your child to throw the dice and add, subtract, divide or times the two numbers.
• Monoploly is great for introducing children to the concept of money and they often do not realise   they are using maths skills whilst playing.
• Battleships is a fantastic game for introducing children to co-ordinates.  Perfect for playing before they have to use graphs.
• Skittles or ten pin bowling.  You can make your own skittles from bottles and give them numbers.  This can help number recognition and addition skills for scoring.

Olympic Logo Facts

• The Olympic Logo is one of the four major symbols of the Olympic games, along with the medals, touch and mascots.
• Each individual games has its own emblem.
• The Olympic rings are five interlocking rings, coloured blue, yellow, black, green and red on a white field, known as the “Olympic rings”. The symbol was originally created in 1913 by Coubertin. He appears to have intended the rings to represent the five continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania. 
• The word “logo” means an emblem or a symbol that defines the identity of an Olympic Games host city and Organising Committee. It is used as the visual identifier of the event.  The London 2012 Logo is all part of the branding package.
• The first time the Emblem for the Paralympics and Olympics was the same was London 2012.

I printed out all of the previous Olympic logos and we made a timeline of the previous Olympic games from them, adding the year and the venue.  Using our atlas we looked up where each of the countries were and with our Flags of the World sticker book.

What makes a good Emblem and what should it include?

We decided that a good logo or emblem is a lot like a coat of arms so should have a characteristic symbol, lettering naming the event location and year, and the Olympic rings.

Paris 2024 Emblem and Logos

Like London 2012, The Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games both share the same emblem. You can download a copy of the Paraolymic one and the Olympic one to colour from our site.

They cleverly combine the Olympic flame and turn it into a woman’s face. Marianne is a national symbol for the country and is a reminder of the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 ashis was the first ceremony where women were allowed to compete.

The Paris 2024 committee says that the logo — and its accompanying typeface — were inspired by the Art Deco movement.

Materials

• Ribbon
• Silver foil
• Gold and bronze pain or crayon
• cardboard or milk bottle lids prepped with PVA glue or polymer clay

To make our medals we pained or colored them in or covered them in silver foil and then drew our chosen design on them.  To get some inspiration we took a look at the past Olympic medal designs and discussed the symbols and their meanings.   I then punched out a hole in the top and threaded the ribbon through.

We also made some out of filmo and airdring clay.  We rolled out the clay and then cut out a circle with a cookie cutter and made a hole at the top with a straw and drew on our designs.  Dry or bake as per instructions and paint in the appropriate colour and allow to dry before threading your ribbon through.

Olympic Medal Facts

The silver used in the first and second place medals must be at least 92.5% pure. The “gold” medals must be gilded with at least six grams of pure gold. Medals also carry the name of the sport contested.

The front sides of the medals awarded at the Games of the Olympiads feature an image of a Hellenic goddess holding a laurel wreath with the Athens Colosseum in the background. Since 1972, local Olympic organising committees have been allowed to create a design for the back sides of the medals.

Throughout their lives I have been keen to encourage independent play.  Here they are counting their pennies in their jar.  I didn’t ask them to do this, but they both love money and they love counting.  So we talked about how many pence in a pound, the different shapes and sizes on money and also the fact that the queen was on all coins.  We then used the coins like tiddliwinks.  For me this was a fun hour of play, which was driven by them and all I did was answer their questions and joined in their games.

As a family we love board games and have a weekly family game night, where choose a game to play and just enjoy each others company, but the boys are learning through playing these games.  They learn numbers on the die, they use their counting skills to move places, their reading skills to check the instructions or read any cards involved and also their creativity depending on the game we choose.
