How to make a Scandinavian Inspired Braided Christmas Wreath

I love a wreath, I think they are a great way to show your personality through decorations and I also love making them. This scandinavian inspired braided wreath was inspired by a tiny decoration I spotted in a local store and also the perfect Ikea Hack.

Scandinavian Inspired Braided Christmas Wreath

I knew I wanted to have a go at making a light up wreath this year and when I saw Ikea’s STRÅLA LED pendant lamp I knew it was perfect for what I wanted to make. I had some macrame rope and knew it would be perfect to braid over the ring and couldn’t wait to experiment.

I am delighted at how it turned out and will be on the lookout for the other size wreth form when I am next in Ikea.

I decided to do a standard plait for my braid, so cut the cord twice the circumference of the ring. There are some ace macrame braids about though.  Just google six strands flat macrame braid.

I taped the strands to the table and platted the cord using two strands as one – so a simple three-strand braid and then I knotted the ends.

Then I used my Glue gun and glued the braid to the ring.

Then you need to cut off the excess and ensure the ends are glued together.  Don’t worry if they are a little messy, the greenery will cover that area.

Lay out your greenery and berries before you start to Fix them.

Attach the greenery and berries using florists wire.  Cut a piece and wrap around the front and twist to secure at the back.

Then glue the wooden balls and bells to the braid or greenery.  I used my Battery Operated glue gun – yep no wires (UK Link/US Link)!
