Follow the colour key and watch the image come to life before your very eyes. The more you colour, the more the picture comes alive. Younger children can learn their numbers and colours. Older kids follow instructions in a creative way. They are a great quiet time activity.

I have gone for really simple images and colour by number worksheets, but if you like them, let me know and I am do some more challenging ones.

I find worksheets are a great activity for when I need to keep the kids occupied whilst I crack on with dinner. I can set them up at a table or on the breakfast bar in the kitchen.

These are also great to take to restaurants (remember them!) to keep kids occupied whilst waiting for their food.

Children can work on their math and also take on the challenge of finding the right shade matching each number.

It is really easy for you to turn any of our colouring pages into a colour by number worksheet simply by adding your own key. Make them interesting for your children by finding images that follow and coincide with their current hobbies and loves or use seasonal images.

Make Learning fun with this simple toy parachute craft.

Depending on the age of your children you can discuss gravity and how a parachute works with air resistance. A great way to demonstrate this is to drop the toy with and without the parachute and time it.

It is fun to make different sized and shape parachutes out of different materials (we used carrier bags, envelopes and ziplock bags. Also, does the length of the strings make a difference? Does the size of the canopy make a difference or even the shape or weight of the parachute?

Materials

• Parachute material – we used carrier bags, envelopes and ziplock bags
• Tapestry needle (large-eyed needle)
• Embroidery thread
• Loom bands (optional)
• Loom band S clips (optional)
• Scissors (please ensure parental supervision before using)

How to make a DIY Toy Parachute

First, you need to cut your chosen parachute material into your chosen shape like this circle. We used a paper plate as a template but also used a compass to draw larger circles.

Cut out your circles and mark four points for the cord to be threaded through.

Decorate your parachute. If you are colouring carrier bags then make sure you use sharpies, so they do not smudge. if you are recycling a large envelope, then standard felt tips, pencils, crayons or paints are fine.

Thread your embroidery thread in to a large headed needed and push through the parachute. Tie a knot in the end and cut your thread to your desired length.

Tie all four threads into a knot.

Take a loom band (I am sure you must have some left lying around after the loom band craze) and place it over the arm of your toy around the back and over the other arm. If you don’t have any loom or elastic bands then you can just tie two threads to each of the toy arms.

Then take a loom band S clip and attach to the loom band and the other side clip over the thread from the parachute.

The summer holidays for me means achieving a balance of screen free summer fun and also time for the boys on their screens.  I don’t want the first thing the boys reach for when they are bored to be technology.  I want them to be able to learn to amuse themselves.  I have been working with Tesco and their Summer Boost Clubcard scheme to come up with some fab ideas for you.

One of the ways I do that is with our bored jar.  It is filled with a selection of fun activities, some family based, some to do on their own and also a selection of chores too! We sit down as a family before the holidays to make a list of our must do’s.  This year I have made a super simple summer planner for us all to fill in.

• Leaves – Ours are fake, but real ones would look ace too (UK Link/US Link)

How to make your Wreath

As my boys are older they cut the middle from the paper places leaving the outside ring, this step is something you can do for younger ones.

They then decided on which leaf they would use where and Mini stuck his on using a Bostik Extra Strength Sticki Dots.

Maxi being a little older is getting more and more proficient on using a glue gun.  We use a low melt glue gun.

Both carried on round until the wreath was covered in leaves and you couldn’t see the paper plate at all.

Using some ribbon from my stash me made a loop and secured it on the back of the paper plate with sticky tape.

Variations:

We love these tissue paper fall wreaths from Happy Hooligans, they are great for preschoolers and toddlers as they love to scrunch and stick tissue paper.

Make a Bored Jar

You can really use any jar or container that you have in the house.  I used a kilner jar that we had in the kitchen and cut out some paper to make a label and also a tag to make it all pretty!
