Digging, pouring, stirring, and scooping can strengthen your child’s hand muscles and improve their fine motor skills.

Playing with a sensory bin can be a very relaxing and calming experience. If your child is getting overstimulated, bringing out a sensory bin may help head off a meltdown.

Step By Step Instructions For Setting Up The Chia Seed Ocean Sensory Bin

In a medium-sized bowl add the water and chia seeds, then stir.

Add a few drops of blue food coloring and stir to incorporate the food coloring. Place the chia seed mixture into the refrigerator for 3 hours.

Add cornstarch to the chia seed mixture. Stir with a spoon to mix the cornstarch in.

Add the chia seed goo to the sensory bin. We love the ones you can get with a lid for easy storage (this can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days), but a deep plastic tray will suffice.

You don’t have to have specific sensory tools. Just add ocean animals, kitchen tongs, kitchen spoons, tweezers, and hands! Then let your little marine biologist free to have their own ocean adventure!

Ideas For Different Sensory Elements To Include

What I love about sensory activities is there is no right or wrong thing and they are so adaptable and you can really change them up with different fillers and small world toys. You could substitute the chia seeds for sand or rice died blue (I like this method as there is no vinegar used). If you don’t want to introduce water then how about using a plastic mirror on the bottom of the tub as the ocean water? Another taste safe option is Jelly (or Jello).

Water beads are also fabulous for changing things up and are wonderfully tactile, although not taste-safe. If you visit the beach you could collect some seashells and seaweed to use too.

Sensory bins and sensory play is a great way to engage and entertain young children while also promoting sensory development and encouraging their fine motor skills. Follow this step by step guide to make a simple dinosaur sensory bin at home.

How to Prepare Your Sensory Bin Filler

In a medium-sized bowl add the water and chia seeds, then stir.

Add a few drops of food coloring and stir to incorporate the food coloring into the water.

Adaptations:

If you want to create a more mud-like swamp then use cocoa powder. If you want to change the texture then try adding some water beads.

This is one of those simple activities that you can put together with things you have at home in less than five minutes and you do not need to be an artist at all. Little hands will love the texture and moving the pompoms around in the bag.

How to Make Your Very Hungry Caterpillar Sensory Squish Bag

Supplies:

• (2) 8 oz Aloe Vera Gel, Hair Gel or you can use any hand sanitiser you might still have.
• Multicolored pom poms
• Jar lid (or anything that is circle-shaped and can be traced)
• Circle shape object smaller than the canning top (for the caterpillar head)
• Black Sharpie
• Multicoloured Sharpies (or permanent markers) to correlate with the pom pom colors
• Large Zip-lock bag
• Packaging tape
• Alcohol swabs (or alcohol and cotton balls)
• White cardstock

Directions:

• Gather all the supplies.

• Take the alcohol swab and erase the writing and lines on your ziplock bag.

• With a black Sharpie or permanent marker trace the caterpillar’s head and create its face on to the top of the ziplock bag.

• Use the multicoloured Sharpies that correlate with the coloured pom poms. Trace a circle for each colour.

• Add 16 oz of aloe vera gel to the ziplock bag. Alternatively, hair gel is really great and inexpensive to use or use hand sanitiser and add a few drops of food colouring.

• Add coloured pom poms.

• Push all the air out of the plastic baggie. Seal the baggie and add a piece of cardstock behind the bag. Use packaging tape to double seal the bag and secure the cardstock in place.

Put together an Easter Craft Pack with our Fun Free Printables

I find it best to not overwhelm kids with too many materials and like to put together a seasonal craft pack with the things I might need such as pipe cleaners, pastel card and paper, easter-themed or pastel washi tape, pipe cleaners, fabric, popsicle sticks, ribbon, burlap, yarn, feathers, little chicks, glue (or a hot glue gun for older kids), markets and egg dye. Craft kits are also a great alternative to candy or eggs and make a great treat for Easter. In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, seventy years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6th February 1952 when Her Majesty was 25 years old. When is The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?

Although the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation falls on February 6, the official celebrations always take place at the start of June. The Platinum Jubilee celebrations will begin on Thursday, June 2nd, and will continue over the weekend until June 5 2020.

As a family we recycle, use our own DIY Eco cleaning products and upcycle where we can, However, I feel it is still key that we set aside this one day to focus on our Earth, our environment and how we can impact it. Using recycled materials in our crafts and activities is one of those ways. Not only are we reusing them, but we are also repurposing them to bring joy.

What using recycled Materials teaches our Children

Encouraging children to recycle is a way of teaching them about sustainability. Learning the importance of being sustainable shows them that the environment is important. It also helps create responsible adults, however, reusing materials that are in the recycling bin encourages children to think about how they can reuse and repurpose something that would go in the bin. It teaches them creativity, to think outside the recycling bin and learn that the recycling bin is not just an another garbage bin.
