Step-by-Step Guide to Making Honeycomb Ornaments

1. Prepare the Coffee Filters and Cake Cases

Start by flattening out your coffee filters and cake cases. These will form the layers of your honeycomb ornament, giving it that distinctive puffed look.

2. Create Your Ornament Shape

If you want to change the size or shape of your decorations now is the time, using a small round object like a glass or jar lid, trace a circle onto the coffee filters and cake cases. You can experiment with different sizes to see what works best for your tree. Cut out the circles — you’ll need about 10 to 15 circles per ornament, depending on how full you want the honeycomb effect to be.

3. Fold and Glue the Circles

Fold each circle in half. Take one folded circle and apply glue in a line on the center line to the edge and fold in half. Repeat this process, layering the folded circles on top of each other. Until you have a stack of about 14.

To create the honeycombed effect you need to attach all the glued layers to each other but with two lines of glue this time – to demonstrate I drew a pencil line as the clear glue is hard to see. This creates the acrodion effect.

4. Keep Glueing and add Hanger

Once all the layers are glued together, you need to glue the center together and this time it is best to use PVA glue which is more flexible. Spread the glue on the spines a small loop of string or ribbon inside the fold to create a hanger for your ornaments and then let dry. I used a bulldog clip for this reason, but clothespins work well to hold it in place while the glue sets. You can also use metallic or coloured thread for a more decorative look.

5. Customize with Colors and Glitter

If you want to take your honeycomb ornaments to the next level, consider painting the edges of the coffee filters or cake cases with metallic paint or adding glitter for a festive shimmer. You can also experiment with colored coffee filters or patterned cake cases to match your Christmas decor theme. I painted the edge of the ornament with PVA glue and then dipped in glitter.

6. Open and Display

Once you’ve added the string and ensured the glue has dried, glue the final open halves together to form a complete circle. HYou can secure with more glue, paper clips or even stick on velcro. Adjust the layers if necessary to make sure the ornament has an even, puffed appearance and then hang on your christmas tree.

Tips for Making DIY Paper Honeycomb Christmas Ornaments

• Vary Sizes: Create different-sized ornaments to add variety to your tree. The white ones here are cake cases and the brown ones are small coffee filters. You could even use Christmas-themed cake cases.

• Personalize: Let the kids decorate their own ornaments with glitter glue, stickers, or mini pom-poms.

• Experiment with Shapes: Instead of circles, try cutting out baubles, hearts, or trees for more holiday variety.

• Try using wooden beads (like I have on the bottom of the coffee filter honeycombed ones to hold the thread.

This is one of those crafts that you can adjust depending on the age of your child Cut out all the felt (or foam) and allow them to glue it or they can cut it out and glue it too.  I made templates for the boys to draw around on the felt with a soft pencil and they cut out the felt themselves.

Materials

• Pine-cones
• Felt (or craft foam) in yellow, brown and orange
• googly eyes
• Glue gun or glue (Maxi uses a glue gun, but mini uses craft PVA)

Method

1. Cut out in yellow a figure of eight shape for the base of the eyes larger than your googly eyes and stick the eyes to it.
2. Then using orange felt or foam cut out a small triangle for the beak and curves with points which are the owls feet.
3. You cut out a square in brown for the owls hat – approximately 2 inches in size, but this depends on your pine cone.
4. Cut two triangles for the owls wings

Glue Resist Art Project for Kids – Pumpkin

We were inspired by these glue line pumpkins and these pumpkins using glue resist.  We decided to use black paper and oil pastels, but they look equally as great on watercolour paper with paints and chalk pastels.

We drew our pumpkins from life using some small pot ones that I had. There is something about glue, whether it is from a squeezy bottle or from a glue gun as it is great for fine motor skills. We allow love seasonal crafting and art and this is a fun fall activity that you can join in making with the kids in the build-up to Halloween. Plus it is the perfect classroom Autumn Halloween art without being scary.

We practiced drawing them on to sheets of paper first, before using a white pencil to draw them on to cardstock. But you could skip this and apply the glue directly to the paper if you are feeling more confident. If you are not confident at all then print off an image to use as a pumpkin template and practice by tracing on to your card or paper.

The benefit of using a glue gun is that it dries faster, making this project faster for impatient children who struggle to wait for the glue to dry! Black glue looks amazing in this project and I didn’t have any so used black paper instead.

If you are using PVA glue, then it is best to allow the glue to dry overnight.  Once dry then you can erase the white lines.

This is a really great project for younger children too as the colour is contained.  We used water soluble oil pastels this time.  But crayons and chalk work well as does watercolors.

We talked about shading and creating a 3D effect by using lighter colours in the center of the segments.  Maxi then finished his pumpkin craft picture by adding some ground and sky to it.

I love how it turned out and also how his friends single pumpkin using chalk turned out too. Next time we do this, I will get some different coloured pumpkins as the kids just wanted to use orange oils!   We just used some hair spray to seal the picture.

How ace do they look! They were so fun to do and I have framed them so they will look great year on year when we bring them out to decorate for Autumn. I think they would also look amazing with watercolor paints too.

How to make a Paper Plate Butterfly

Supplies:

• Large paper plates (non-coated, honestly the cheapies are perfect)
• Bubble tea straws or large popsicle stick
• Watercolor paints
• Paintbrush
• Stapler
• Hot glue gun or glue dots
• Permanent markers or Sharpie
• Scissors

Instructions:

There is something magical about giving kids a paper plate as a blank canvas and some paints. I love seeing what they come up with without any input from me. Process art is so important for everyone and this is a great craft that can combine both process art and an end product piece of craft.

So the plate will be cut to produce the butterfly wings and when I look at a circle, I always see Kadinskys circles in squares! I love a Kandinsky craft.

Paint a paper plate using the colors of your choice. Set aside to dry.

Once the paper plate is dry, fold it in half to create a crease then cut it in half.

Overlap the two half-moons and cut a “V” out. giving the wings dimension.

Place the “V” on the outside and overlap the rounded side of the plate to make the wings. Secure them by using 1-2 staples.

Cut a bubble straw down to the size of the middle of the butterfly. At the top of the bubble straw cut a small “v” which is great for fine motor skills.

Carefully add a line of hot glue over the staples where the bubble tea straw body will lay. Hold it there for a few seconds to make sure it is secure. Alternatively, if you have younger kids such as preschoolers and can’t offer the supervision needed for a glue gun, glue dots are great for this as they adhere immediately. You could also use a mega craft stick or popsicle stick as the body of the butterfly like Jean at The Artful Parent.

Add a face to your butterfly using a permanent marker like a Sharpie.

And then keep making more!

Just imagine a wall in a classroom filled with all of these unique butterflies. They would be great with these paper plate caterpillars from backyard camp perfect for a lesson on the different stages of the butterfly life cycle and the metamorphosis.

Adaptations

This beautiful paper plate butterfly craft can be adapted for kids of all ages.

• You could also add antennas using pipe cleaners with older kids.
• You could add stickers to the wings and self-adhesive googly eyes when working with younger children such as toddlers.
